There is a story about a one-man bike repair shop where, on every repair, the owner would spend five more minutes to do something a little extra: add a streamer or remove some rust; nothing extravagant, but something to show he appreciated the business.

I was recently reminded of this story, and it brought to mind an example that applies to fundraising from a small nonprofit that I have given to for years.

One day, I got a call from their vice president (VP) of development thanking me for my recent $40 gift to the ministry. Shocked by this I started to probe. Obviously the VP can’t call all the low-dollar donors, even the multi-year ones, so what was this really about? I was excited because I thought I was going to hear some new fundraising spin.

But instead, the VP just tells me that at the end of his day he takes the giving report, finds a few names with phone numbers and gives them a call to thank them personally. He knows he can’t call everyone, but the ones he reaches are always thankful. They have major donor representatives for the high value ones, but no one thinks of taking the time to thank the consistent donors at the bottom of the giving triangle.

Obviously, I was touched by the thought and the call. And his few minutes at the end of his day sealed it — I will be a donor with them for a long time.

Which means he had a pretty good return on his thank-you call and his five minutes at the end of the day.

Fundraising through mobile has been a hot topic lately, especially with the many millions of dollars raised via the channel after the Haiti earthquake.

Mobile fundraising is a relatively young channel, and we know it can be complicated and confusing sometimes — so we’ve put together a whitepaper on the current State of Mobile Fundraising to help you out.

Download The State of Mobile Fundraising

The whitepaper spends significant time addressing specifically Text2Give — currently the most common method of giving in mobile (involves sending text messages and $5 or $10 gifts — this is how most money for Haiti was raised).

Discussed topics include:

A fledgling channel … still.

The players are many.

Cultural adoption is going to take time.

Text giving isn’t the only mobile fundraising option.

The hurdles are high, very high.

The importance of promotion (the real cost).

There are bright spots.

So what should nonprofit organizations be doing?

Mobile giving continues to evolve and change rapidly (we’ve seen plenty of major changes and breakthroughs happen just weeks apart). So check out the whitepaper now, before it’s out of date!

Join Carter Wade and Kn Moy and learn more about the Donors for Life® strategy that will help you redefine how you engage your donors.

Space is limited.Reserve your Webinar seat now at:
https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/778613520

A great donor experience will create faster, better and more sustainable revenue than the typical donor cultivation approaches used today that churn-and-burn higher and higher percentages of your donors every year. We can’t keep doing what we’ve always done because the things we’ve always done are causing the very problems we are facing today in donor acquisition and cultivation.

We know that the experiences that donors have can turn them into lifelong donors and advocates for your organization. Engage with us on the conversation!

The most informative session I attended at the 2010 Nonprofit Technology Conference had “behavioral economics” in the subtitle. Being a former Political Science major, anything with “economics” in the title has me at hello.

Mostly because I believe economics is one of the few disciplines that can accurately predict how society will respond. Like it or not, we all respond to incentives, economic and otherwise. The session highlighted eight principles of fundraising supported by behavioral economics.

All eight were reflected in what I hear at every creative meeting at Masterworks. Our experience and testing has supports the central theory behind behavioral economics: that a rational argument is not always the most effective argument. If you want to read more you can download an ebook that mirrors the presentation.

Mark Rovner presented principle #3: “Stick to social norms, not market norms.” Mark gave an example drawn from the research of behavioral economist Dan Ariely that clearly delineates between the two.

A preschool was seeing that more and more individuals were showing up late to pick up their kids. In order to stem the tide they instituted per- minute fines for lateness. The results: tardiness went up.

Once the preschool put a cost to every minute they moved the mindset from social norms to market norms. Parents now did not have the social pressure to pick their kids up on time because the preschool was now being compensated.

Mark went on to say that once you introduce market norms into a situation, it is very difficult to go back and get folks to respond to social norms.

During Q & A someone asked about the impact of this principle on alternative gift catalogs. The consensus was that because the donor isn’t getting any benefit, the mere fact of the donation experience feeling more like shopping doesn’t invoke market norms.

Market norms are most likely to be created with donors when premiums are offered. The panel supported what we know from experience here at Masterworks: premiums don’t acquire donors with high long- term value.

If you can avoid going down that road, do it. If you already have used premiums to acquire and then likely cultivate donors, you likely have to continue that strategy with existing donors but moving forward you could use segmentation to create a “premium free” group of new and higher dollar recent donors.

Incentives matter, but ministries can receive more and more meaningful support by relying on the social benefits a donation brings. Relying on market benefits and market norms creates transactional donors moved by their next premium fix, not your cause.

Kn Moy, SR VP of Insight & Innovation

Donor loyalty. It’s hard to come by these days. Most organizations keep doing what they have always done, but it’s not working.

But there is another way: creating donors for life. In this workshop Kn and Carter will present an approach, based on the science of Customer Experience Management, for improving donor engagement, reducing donor attrition and maximizing long-term donor value.

At this workshop you’ll learn . . .

why we can’t keep doing what we’ve always done in fundraising in today’s 2.0 world of donor behavior.

fundraising ‘s central operating principal, and how to apply this central truth in your donor engagement strategies.

seven donor-facing disciplines that will help them create a donor experience management approach to donor engagement.

“How to Successfully Raise Funds Online”

Well, then you’re in luck. Dave and Megan will be addressing just that. Over the last year Campus Crusade for Christ has run a number of integrated multi-channel campaigns that have been especially successful at generating online revenue. They’ll be sharing best practices and results from these campaigns.

At this workshop you’ll get practical tips for cultivating donors on and offline. You’ll learn . . .

best practices in driving successful integrated multi-channel fundraising.

specific examples of multi-channel fundraising in action.

practical applications for the cultivation of new donors.

“Thanks” is a six-letter word that should flow out of the mouth of a development professional even more naturally than the four-letter word “give.” There’s no better time to demonstrate that “thanks” in a tangible and memorable way.

One effective method would be to launch a “Partner’s Circle” for mid-major donors and frequent donors – anyone with four or more gifts of any size during any one of the past three years. That recognizes consistency as well as ability to give larger gifts.

Honor this exemplary commitment with a simple mailing. Nothing glitzy. But include a nice leather bookmark, certificate or other recognition medium that carries the Partner’s Circle ID prominently. A certificate has the advantage of featuring the donor’s name. Then, every time you communicate throughout the year, refer to the donor as a member of the Partner’s Circle. That gives the donor one more reason to give. “I’m a special part of this organization. I’m recognized. I’m key to their success.”

You could also “seal the deal” on membership by following up with a seven-question questionnaire and an invitation to an event over the course of the year. That would add meat to the membership.

The more ways you figure out how to say “thanks,” the more authentic your relationship will become.
