A Masterworks event is a private tour, preview or talk at a gallery, museum or auction house in New York, led by the Masterworks art team and by the institutions' own curators. There are about two a week. Masterworks Club members reserve places first come, first served, and a member can bring a guest. Event programming is offered periodically at Masterworks' discretion, varies by location and availability, and is not guaranteed.
Collectors have always learned about art in person, in front of the work, from people who know it. The Art Basel and UBS Survey of Global Collecting 2025 polled 3,100 high-net-worth individuals across 10 markets, and the average respondent attended 48 art-related events in 2024 and made seven studio visits, with eight planned for 2025 [1]. A Masterworks event gives a member in New York that kind of calendar, with the art team and the curators on hand to answer what an investor wants to know.
What kinds of events does Masterworks host?
The calendar runs in six formats, five in person and one online.
A museum after hours
Some events take place inside a museum after the public has left, with after-hours access to a current exhibition [2]. The group is small and the galleries are quiet, so you can stand at the distance a painter intended, return to a canvas a second time, and ask the curator why a picture hangs beside the one next to it. A crowded Saturday afternoon allows none of that.
A gallery walkthrough with the gallery's own curators
Commercial galleries show and sell the work of the artists they represent, and their exhibitions are where a living artist's new work is usually seen first. At a gallery event, the walkthrough of the current show is led by the gallery's own curators, the people who chose the works and hung them. They can say where a painting sits in the artist's career, which series it belongs to, and how the show came together, which is the context an investor needs before reading that artist's auction results.
An auction preview
Before every major sale, the auction houses hang the lots for viewing. In November 2025, Sotheby's opened its first New York sales at the Breuer building on Madison Avenue for public viewing on November 8, ten days before Gustav Klimt's portrait of Elisabeth Lederer sold there for $236.4 million, in a series that totaled $1.17 billion [3][4]. A preview is the one stretch of days when a painting headed for the market can be inspected up close. Our preview events are private tours of those viewings. The mechanics of a preview, and how to read one on your own, are in our guides to auction previews and how auction estimates are set.
A studio visit
A studio visit takes a small group to where an artist works, with canvases in progress, materials on the table, and a series laid out across the walls. Collectors use studio visits to understand a living artist's practice before they buy; the collectors in the Art Basel and UBS survey averaged seven a year [1]. Studio visits are part of the membership calendar.
An artist talk
At an artist talk, the artist speaks about the work, often in conversation with a curator, and then takes questions [2]. A talk is more structured than a studio visit and suits a larger group. For an investor, an hour with the artist teaches the vocabulary of a body of work, and the next auction catalog for that artist reads differently afterward.
Live auction commentary, online
Live auction commentary is the one format held online. During a major evening sale, our chief executive, our head of acquisitions and sales, and our director of appraisals watch the bidding in real time and talk through what it means for each artist's market. We held one during Sotheby's evening sale on November 18, 2025, and another during Christie's evening sale on May 18, 2026 [5][6].
Who leads a Masterworks event?
Events are led by the Masterworks art team and by the institutions' own curators. At a museum event, a curator who knows the exhibition usually takes the group through it. At a gallery, the gallery's own curators lead. At an auction house, the specialists who assembled the sale know the lots best, and our art team adds the investor's view of the same works. Events are kept small, so there is time for questions.
How often are there events, and how do reservations work?
There are about two events a week in New York. Members reserve a place first come, first served, and can bring a guest, a friend or colleague. Tell us about your guest when you reserve, so we can hold a place. Event programming is offered periodically at Masterworks' discretion, varies by location and availability, and is not guaranteed.
The record runs well beyond New York: 219 member events across 96 venues in 26 cities, May 2025 to August 2026 [2].
Where have Masterworks events been held?
Masterworks has hosted events at the Museum of Modern Art, the Getty, the Hirshhorn, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Crystal Bridges and the Clyfford Still Museum; at Sotheby's, Christie's, Phillips and Bonhams; at Gagosian, David Zwirner, Hauser & Wirth, Pace and Karma; and at the Brant Foundation, the Rauschenberg Foundation, the Hill Art Foundation and the FLAG Art Foundation [2].
Institutions named are venues at which Masterworks has hosted an event; they are not partners, sponsors or endorsers of Masterworks.
Works from the Masterworks collection also hang in museums. More than 70 works are on view or committed to loans, in 18 cities, at more than 40 museums and private foundations, and investors receive complimentary tickets to visit works they have invested in [2].
Can members host their own event?
Yes. Members can bring their own guests to the Level & Co. gallery at 30 East 74th Street, with Masterworks handling invitations, refreshments, speakers and coordination. Some works from the collection hang at Level & Co., so a hosted event takes place among paintings the collection holds. A member can use it to introduce friends and colleagues to the art and to the people who know it, on the member's own date.
How do you get to a Masterworks event?
A person who is not yet a member comes as a member's guest. To reserve places yourself, you apply for Masterworks Club membership. Membership is by application. You apply online at masterworks.com/membership/apply with your details, a little about you and art, and a card on file. Our membership committee reviews the candidacy and verifies your identity, against criteria set in advance; no software ranks or scores applicants. A short call follows about what you want from membership, and once you are accepted, you reserve your first event. If a member sent you, add their name to your application.
Membership is available from $1,000 per year. Nothing is charged unless your application is accepted, and we will confirm before anything is billed. Membership runs for twelve months from the date your application is accepted.
Membership is a social and educational program. It is not a security, it does not represent an investment in Masterworks or in any artwork, and it confers no ownership interest, economic interest or right to any return. Membership neither requires nor commits a member to make any investment, and the membership fee gives a member no preferential access, pricing or terms in connection with any Masterworks offering.
Everything membership includes beyond the calendar is set out in Masterworks Membership: What It Includes and How to Apply. Why we built the company around a club is the subject of Why Masterworks Is Organized Around a Club.
