Andrei Petrovich Gorsky

Andrei Petrovich Gorsky was an officially recognized Soviet and Russian painter, named People's Artist of the Russian Federation and later elected academician of the Russian Academy of Arts, whose work is held by the State Tretyakov Gallery and the State Russian Museum. He is a useful case for collectors in a different way than most artists on this site: his reputation rests almost entirely on institutional recognition and museum holdings inside Russia, with no documented public auction record to anchor a secondary market.

Gorsky was born on 17 April 1926 in Moscow, into the family of a physician. In 1939 he entered the Moscow Secondary Art School, attached to what is now the Surikov Institute, and completed the secondary school in 1946. That same year he entered the Moscow State Art Institute named after V. I. Surikov, graduating with distinction in 1952. He joined the Moscow Society of Artists in 1951 and the Union of Artists of the USSR in 1956, and went on to build a body of work centered on historical and genre subjects.

His state recognition followed a steady institutional path: Honored Artist of the RSFSR in 1982, People's Artist of the Russian Federation in 1996, full membership in the Petrovsky Academy of Sciences and Arts in 2001, corresponding membership in the Russian Academy of Arts in 2007, and full academician status there in 2012. He died in Moscow in September 2015; sources disagree on the exact day, with the Russian Academy of Arts recording 19 September and other biographical sources recording 22 September.

No verbatim, attributable critical commentary about Gorsky in a named major outlet could be confirmed in the available research. What can be documented is a consistent record of official institutional recognition rather than press criticism: state titles in 1982 and 1996, election to the Petrovsky Academy in 2001, and progression to corresponding member and then academician of the Russian Academy of Arts between 2007 and 2012. His body of work is described in institutional sources as centered on Moscow and Russian historical themes, though specific titled series could not be independently verified in this review.

As of 2026-07-18, no verified public auction sale of a work by Andrei Petrovich Gorsky could be confirmed, despite checking major auction-market references and art-price databases. His name is easily confused in searches with the German photographer Andreas Gursky, whose unrelated auction market has no connection to this artist and should not be cited in relation to him. No current gallery or estate representative could be confirmed either; his work is held in Russian museum collections rather than through an active commercial gallery market.

There is no catalogue raisonne and no documented certificate-of-authenticity program for Gorsky. Anyone researching a work attributed to him would need to work from institutional records at the State Tretyakov Gallery and the State Russian Museum, since no independent authentication body has been identified. No current gallery or estate representative is confirmed. Most importantly, no verified auction record exists in the sources reviewed for this profile, so there is no established public price history to use as a benchmark. Provenance should be verified directly through the institutions above rather than through market comparables, which are not currently documented for this artist.
