Why Ángeles Agrela matters
Ángeles Agrela is a Spanish painter and draftswoman whose reworkings of the female portrait, built around hair rendered as a dense symbolic mass, have made her one of the most decorated painters in Spain's national prize circuit and, more recently, a fixture on an international gallery roster that spans Los Angeles, New York, Bucharest, and Madrid. For a collector, she represents an artist whose institutional and critical footing in Spain is well established, while her auction market outside Spain is still young and comparatively thin, a gap that her expanding international representation is actively working to close.

Biography
Ángeles Agrela Romero was born on 13 August 1966 in Úbeda, Jaén, Spain. She studied at the Facultad de Bellas Artes Alonso Cano at the Universidad de Granada from 1985 to 1990, earning a Licenciatura in Fine Arts, and continued her training at the Talleres del Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid from 1991 to 1992. An Erasmus scholarship took her to Naples in 1991, a Manuel Rivera grant supported study at the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana in 1998, and a residency at the Glogauer Center brought her to Berlin in 2007.
Her practice moves across painting, drawing, photography, video, and installation, and has centered increasingly on the representation of women, with hair used as a recurring formal and symbolic element. She had her first major solo museum exhibition at the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo in Seville in September 2001, a milestone she has cited herself as a turning point. Through the 2000s and 2010s she built a dense record of national recognition, including first prizes from the Junta de Cantabria (2010), the Diputación de Jaén (2017), and the Premio Internacional de Pintura Focus in Seville (2017), culminating in the top prize at the Premio BMW de Pintura in 2015, awarded at Madrid's Teatro Real. Museum surveys followed, including "El cuerpo en la mirada" at the Centro de Arte Alcobendas (2019) and "Las bellas durmientes" at the Museo Memoria de Andalucía in Granada (2020).
Since the early 2020s her exhibition history has expanded internationally through galleries including Anat Ebgi in Los Angeles, Perrotin in Dubai, and CICA Vancouver, and she has built a sustained relationship with Galería Yusto/Giner in Marbella and Madrid, where "Soledad" (2025) was her fourth solo exhibition with the gallery. She is now also represented by Nicodim Gallery, with locations in Los Angeles, New York, and Bucharest, which has scheduled a solo exhibition in Los Angeles for 2026. She currently lives and works in Granada, Spain.
Critical reception
Agrela's reception has been shaped largely by Spanish institutions and prize juries rather than by a body of independent critical writing in major international outlets, and no verified verbatim critical assessment from a named critic could be confirmed for this profile. What recurs across gallery and museum texts is a consistent framing of her work as a sustained interrogation of how women are represented, with hair functioning as both formal device and symbol of identity, memory, and constraint. Her decade of prizes across Spanish regional and national competitions, paired with her 2001 solo debut at the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo, established her early as a serious figure within Spanish contemporary painting; her more recent adoption by Nicodim, Anat Ebgi, and Perrotin marks a second phase in which that reputation is being tested on an international stage.
Market
Agrela's clearest auction benchmark is Alicia, which sold for USD 144,900 at Phillips New York on 28 September 2022, a result that Phillips described at the time as a new auction record for the artist. Market trackers report that her realized prices at auction have otherwise ranged much lower, roughly from USD 16,000 to the Alicia result, reflecting a market that is still small in volume and concentrated in recent years. Additional lots have continued to surface at secondary venues, including a 2026 spring sale listing at LLB Auction and a Latin American and Latinx art sale at Los Angeles Modern Auctions, alongside a Christie's-catalogued work from 2020. Her primary market activity, however, runs mainly through her galleries rather than the auction room, and her national Spanish prize record and museum exhibitions have historically outweighed her auction footprint as evidence of standing.

What collectors should know
Agrela's market outside Spain is young: her auction high of USD 144,900 for Alicia at Phillips New York in 2022 stands well above most of her other recorded results, so any single result should be read against a small and uneven sale history rather than a smooth trend line. There is no catalogue raisonne, which puts extra weight on gallery and exhibition provenance, particularly through Nicodim and Yusto/Giner, her two current representing galleries. Buyers researching her at auction should also be aware of cataloguing variants, since her work appears under both "Angeles Agrela" and "Ángeles Agrela," and occasionally indexed surname-first as "Agrela, Angeles," all referring to the same artist and signed on works as "A. Agrela."
