Biography
Antoni van Leeuwenhoek was born on 24 October 1632 in Delft, in the Dutch Republic. His formal education was modest: schooling in Delft as a young child, followed by a period at a Latin or grammar school in Warmond, near Leiden, from around age eight. After his father's death he lived for a time with his uncle, Cornelis Jacobz. van den Berch, a sheriff and bailiff in Benthuizen, where he is thought to have picked up bookkeeping and administrative skills, though no primary source documents the details. Around age sixteen, in about 1648, he was sent to Amsterdam to apprentice in the cloth trade under the Scottish merchant William Davidson. He never attended a university and never earned a university degree; in 1669 he did pass a professional examination in Delft to become a licensed land surveyor, a vocational credential rather than an academic one.
Van Leeuwenhoek spent most of his working life in Delft as a draper and as a minor municipal official, including as a surveyor and as a wine gauger. Alongside this trade, he taught himself to grind small, exceptionally powerful single lenses and to build simple microscopes around them, achieving magnifications well beyond the compound microscopes of his era. Beginning in 1673, he sent a long series of letters describing his observations to the Royal Society of London, reporting bacteria, protozoa he called "animalcules," red blood cells, and spermatozoa among other discoveries. The Royal Society elected him a Fellow in 1680, an honor he was proud enough of to have commemorated in a 1686 portrait by Jan Verkolje, which shows him beside his fellowship certificate. He died in Delft on 26 August 1723, at age ninety. A minority of secondary sources give the death date as 27 or 30 August, but the weight of authoritative reference sources, including Encyclopaedia Britannica and peer-reviewed historical reviews, supports 26 August 1723.
Critical reception
Van Leeuwenhoek's standing rests entirely on the history of science rather than on art criticism. He is routinely called the father of microbiology in encyclopedic and scholarly sources, credited with the first documented observations of single-celled organisms and bacteria using instruments of his own design and construction. His scientific reputation was recognized in his own lifetime through his 1680 election as a Fellow of the Royal Society, and it has been institutionalized since through honors that carry his name: a Leeuwenhoek Medal awarded periodically by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences for major contributions to microbiology, the Royal Society's Leeuwenhoek Lecture, a lunar crater, and a scientific journal, Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, that bears his name. Recent scholarship marking the 300th anniversary of his death, published in 2023, reaffirmed this consensus and situated him as a self-taught outsider to the university science of his day whose patience and skill produced discoveries that professionally trained contemporaries had missed.
