Artist

Chloe Wise

Canadian, b. 1990

Painting · Sculpture · Video · Installation

Chloe Wise built a following by treating food, fashion, and internet-era consumer culture as material for fine art, most famously in sculptures that cast everyday bread forms in urethane and paint them with designer logos. That combination of viral appeal and formal painterly skill moved quickly from a Montreal art school studio to a gallery program at Almine Rech, museum group shows, and, in 2026, her first major European institutional survey. For a collector, she represents an artist whose cultural visibility has clearly outpaced her auction history, a market still in its early, formative stage.

Chloe Wise was born in 1990 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts, with distinction, from Concordia University in Montreal in 2013 (some sources describe the program as Fine Arts and Art History), and relocated to New York around the same time. Working across painting, sculpture, video, and installation, she became known for stylized figurative portraits of her social circle and for a body of sculptural work, including a "bread bag" series of urethane loaves painted to mimic luxury handbags, that reads consumer culture, food trends, and status objects through a satirical, pop-inflected lens.

Her first solo exhibitions were held at Division Gallery in Montreal and Toronto in 2015. Representation by Almine Rech followed, with solo shows in Paris (2017), London (2019), and New York (2021), alongside shows at Galerie Sebastien Bertrand in Geneva and Blouin Division in Montreal. In 2019 she held her first institutional solo exhibition, And Everything Was True, at HEART, the Herning Museum of Contemporary Art in Denmark. In 2023 she presented the project Told A Vision at Art Basel Parcours in Basel. Her work has been shown in group exhibitions at institutions including the Andy Warhol Museum and the Centre Pompidou-Metz, and in 2026 she opened Extrasensory, a major solo exhibition at Kulturstiftung Basel H. Geiger in Basel, running from June 12 to September 6, 2026. She continues to live and work in New York.

Critical attention to Chloe Wise has centered on the tension in her work between humor and craft: writers have described her still lifes and portraits as clever, satirical homages to food and status culture, built with a level of painterly and sculptural technique that keeps the work from reading as pure novelty. Her rapid path from a 2013 art school graduation to gallery representation, museum group shows, an institutional solo debut in Denmark in 2019, and a 2026 survey in Basel has been read by galleries and institutions as evidence of a maturing, serious practice rather than a one-note social media moment. No verbatim assessment from a named critic at a major outlet could be confirmed for this profile.

Chloe Wise's auction history is short and still developing relative to her cultural profile. Her recorded auction high is Anonymous Now, which sold for GBP 101,600 (approximately USD 129,000) at Phillips London on 15 March 2024. The next-highest recorded result is I was dating two tauruses at the same time, they were so different (2015), which sold for USD 94,500 at Sotheby's New York on 16 March 2022, followed by Making inoffensive magic in your house, which sold for USD 69,300 at Phillips New York on 18 May 2023. Her primary market runs through Almine Rech, which has given her a consistent exhibition history in Paris, London, New York, Brussels, and Shanghai since the late 2010s.

There is no catalogue raisonne for Chloe Wise, and no public certificate-of-authenticity program; verification runs through Almine Rech and through the provenance records that accompany individual auction lots. Her auction record sits in the low six figures on a small number of sales, so any single result should be read as an early data point rather than a stable trend line. The strongest signals of durability so far are institutional: gallery representation with consistent international programming, museum group placements, and a first major European institutional survey in 2026.
