Danielle McKinney

American, b. 1981

Painting · Photography

Danielle McKinney has moved from a working photographer's practice to becoming one of the fastest-rising figurative painters of the 2020s, with her small, intimate scenes of solitary women now held by major museums on both sides of the Atlantic. For a collector, she represents an early-career artist whose critical and institutional validation, gallery representation, and auction results have all accelerated together, even though her public trading history remains short.

Danielle McKinney was born in 1981 in Montgomery, Alabama, and lives and works in Jersey City, New Jersey. She earned a BFA from the Atlanta College of Art in 2005 and an MFA from Parsons School of Design in 2013, training in both cases as a photographer. She worked in photography for years before turning to painting, developing a practice of small-scale, acrylic-on-canvas and oil-on-canvas paintings that place a single Black woman inside a dimly lit domestic interior, often at rest, smoking, reading, or otherwise withdrawn from view.

Her paintings, frequently framed by critics and curators around ideas of interiority, rest, and quiet refusal, gained wider notice with the 2021 solo exhibition SAW MY SHADOW at the Fortnight Institute in New York. She was soon picked up by Marianne Boesky Gallery in New York, followed later by Galerie Max Hetzler in Berlin, Paris, London, and Marfa, and her work entered group exhibitions addressing contemporary Black figuration, including The Time Is Always Now: Artists Reframe the Black Figure at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In 2025 the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University named her its Ruth Ann and Nathan Perlmutter Artist-in-Residence and presented Tell Me More, her solo U.S. museum debut. In 2026 the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach opened Shelter, a survey covering the last five years of her practice.

Press coverage of McKinney, including profiles in CNN, Vogue, and the Boston Art Review, has consistently centered on her paintings as studies in Black interiority and rest, reading the smoke, low light, and closed eyes of her subjects as a deliberate refusal of spectacle. Institutionally, Rose Art Museum curator Gannit Ankori situated the work within a language of introspection and quiet resistance on the occasion of McKinney's 2025 solo U.S. museum debut. Her inclusion in survey exhibitions on contemporary Black figuration, alongside the rapid sequence of museum acquisitions from the Metropolitan Museum of Art to the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, indicates a critical consensus is forming quickly around her work, even relative to her short exhibition history.

McKinney's auction record is Other Worldly (2021), which sold for GBP 264,600 (about USD 339,200) at Christie's London on 5 March 2025, a 68 percent rise over her prior high. That prior record had been set by We Need to Talk (2020), which sold for USD 201,600 at Christie's New York on 15 May 2023. Two months after the Other Worldly sale, on 15 May 2025, Stand Still (2023) sold for USD 279,400 at Sotheby's New York, a result below the March 2025 record. Her secondary market only began forming in 2023, so the number of public sales remains small and any single result can move the picture considerably.

McKinney has no catalogue raisonne, which is typical for an artist this early in a market career, and works should be verified through her studio and her two representing galleries, Marianne Boesky Gallery and Galerie Max Hetzler. Her auction history is brief, effectively beginning in 2023, so collectors should treat any single sale price as an early data point rather than an established trend line. Her museum collecting is unusually broad for her stage of career, spanning major U.S. and European institutions, which is the strongest signal of durability even as her public sales record continues to build.
