Flora Yukhnovich

Flora Yukhnovich was born in 1990 in Norwich, United Kingdom, and lives and works in London. Her formal training moved through three stages: a Foundation in Art and Design at Kingston University, London (2009 to 2010), a Diploma and Post-Diploma in Portraiture at The Heatherley School of Fine Art, London (2010 to 2013), and an MA Fine Art at the City & Guilds of London Art School, London (2016 to 2017).

She held her first solo exhibition at Brocket, London, in 2018. Her paintings pull loose, layered, high-key brushwork from eighteenth-century French Rococo painters such as Boucher and Fragonard and from Italian Baroque sources, then splice those references with contemporary film, music, and consumer culture, producing large abstractions that only partly resolve into recognizable imagery. She received the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Award in 2013 and 2016, and completed The Great Women Artists Residency at Palazzo Monti in Brescia, Italy, in 2018.

Her institutional profile expanded quickly through the 2020s. She was among the first artists in the Ashmolean Museum's "Ashmolean NOW" series in Oxford (2023 to 2024). In 2024, paintings by Yukhnovich were shown at the Wallace Collection in London in direct dialogue with, and in place of, works by Francois Boucher, and her solo exhibition "Into the Woods" opened at Ordrupgaard in Denmark, her first museum show outside the UK. In 2023, Hauser & Wirth announced it would represent her globally alongside Victoria Miro, who had represented her since earlier in her career. From September 2025 to March 2026, she produced a site-specific mural installation for the Frick Collection's Cabinet Gallery in New York, conceived in dialogue with Boucher's "Four Seasons," while a concurrent solo exhibition, "Bacchanalia," was mounted at Hauser & Wirth's Downtown Los Angeles gallery, and a further project with Victoria Miro, titled "Egg," was scheduled for Venice in 2026.

Critics and institutions have converged quickly on Yukhnovich as a significant figure among painters who reinterpret art history through abstraction. Institutional texts from her galleries and press coverage of her museum projects have emphasized her fusion of period sources, Rococo, Baroque, and abstract expressionism, with references drawn from contemporary film, music, and consumer culture. The recurring critical thread is that her abstraction rewards viewers who recognize the historical paintings she is quoting, while still functioning as pure color and gesture for those who do not.

Yukhnovich's auction market rose with unusual speed. Her current auction record is GBP 2,690,000 (approximately USD 3.6 million), achieved at Sotheby's London in March 2022; the title of the record work has not been disclosed in press coverage of the sale. That result surpassed an earlier high of GBP 2,500,000 (about USD 3.1 million) for "I'll Have What She's Having," sold at a Sotheby's London evening sale in October 2021, well above its presale estimate. Given how few of her works have come to auction, any single result should be read as one data point rather than a stable trend line.

Yukhnovich's market is young and thin in auction supply, with results concentrated in 2021 and 2022, so any headline price should be weighed against how few comparable works have sold. There is no catalogue raisonne for an artist this early in her career, and authentication in practice runs through her representing galleries, Hauser & Wirth and Victoria Miro. Her institutional momentum, museum solo projects at the Frick, the Wallace Collection, Ordrupgaard, and the Ashmolean within a few years of each other, is the strongest signal of durability, but collectors should treat her price history as still being written rather than settled.
