Florian Krewer

German, b. 1986

Painting

Florian Krewer is a German-born, New York-based painter whose career has accelerated with unusual speed: a decade after entering art school by way of a house-painting apprenticeship and an architecture degree, he now shows with Michael Werner Gallery, holds a growing list of museum surveys, and in 2026 opened a solo exhibition at the Musee d'Art Moderne de Paris in France. For a collector, he represents an emerging-market case study, an artist whose institutional support is building faster than his auction history, with a record price that has risen sharply within the space of about a year.

Florian Krewer was born in 1986 in Gerolstein, Germany. Before turning to fine art, he completed a three-year apprenticeship as a house painter, from 2003 to 2006, then studied architecture at Cologne University of Applied Sciences, earning a BA between 2008 and 2011. Encouraged to pursue painting, he enrolled at the Kunstakademie Dusseldorf in 2011, studying for six years as a master student of Peter Doig and graduating in 2017, the same year he received the academy's Beatrice R. Potter Prize for accomplishment in painting.

Krewer's large-scale figurative paintings, often built around male figures, animals, and scenes of urban nightlife, address intimacy, masculinity, and vulnerability. Around 2020 he relocated from Germany to the South Bronx, New York, where he continues to live and work. He is represented by Michael Werner Gallery, with solo shows at the gallery's New York, London, and Beverly Hills spaces. In 2022 he received the Prix Jean-Francois Prat, awarded by the Bredin Prat Foundation in Paris, the same year his work appeared in a major group presentation at the Kunsthalle Dusseldorf. Institutional recognition has continued to build: a solo exhibition, "everybody rise," at the Aspen Art Museum and "Nice Dog" at M WOODS Museum in Beijing both opened in 2023, and in 2026 the Musee d'Art Moderne de Paris opened "Florian Krewer: woven thin," his solo exhibition there, running into 2027.

Krewer's institutional trajectory, from a Kunstakademie Dusseldorf prize under Peter Doig to museum surveys at the Aspen Art Museum, M WOODS Museum, and the Musee d'Art Moderne de Paris within a few years of graduating, has been read by galleries and institutions as evidence of a fast-maturing figurative painter. Museum and gallery texts consistently describe his work in terms of intimacy, masculinity, and vulnerability rendered through dense, physical paint handling. Broader art-press coverage of the artist exists, but no verbatim critical assessment could be confirmed from primary sources for this profile, so none is quoted here.

Krewer's auction market is young and thin, but has moved quickly. His current auction record is night hunters (2022), which sold for USD 256,000 at Sotheby's New York on 14 May 2026, in The Now and Contemporary Evening Auction. That result reportedly represented an increase of roughly 375 percent over his previous record, Untitled (2015), which sold for GBP 40,640 (about USD 52,405) at Phillips London on 6 March 2025. With only a small number of public sales on record, each new result has the potential to move the artist's benchmark price substantially.

Authentication and provenance

No catalogue raisonne.

No catalogue raisonne exists for this early-career artist. Works are verified through the artist's primary gallery, Michael Werner Gallery.

Krewer has no catalogue raisonne, which is typical for an artist this early in his career; works should be verified through his primary gallery, Michael Werner Gallery. His auction history is short, with a record price that has moved sharply higher within about a year, a pattern that signals strong demand but also thin, volatile pricing rather than an established trend line. Collectors should treat any single auction result as an early data point rather than a stable benchmark, and weigh the strength of his current museum program, which includes his current solo show in France, against the limited depth of his public sale record.
