Why Giuseppe Gabani matters
Giuseppe Gabani was a nineteenth century Italian painter whose battle scenes, cavalry subjects, and Orientalist compositions earned him steady recognition in Rome, Berlin, Turin, Venice, and as far afield as Melbourne. For today's collector he represents a different kind of case study than a contemporary blue-chip name: a historical artist whose auction record is thin and, in places, contradictory, and whose institutional holdings are not clearly documented in public sources. His profile is useful precisely because it shows how much diligence is required to verify basic facts, from a disputed death year to an auction record that no single source fully documents, before any collecting decision is made.

Biography
Giuseppe Gabani was born on 27 July 1846 in Senigallia, in the Province of Ancona. He trained in Rome under Cesare Maccari and Giuseppe Raggio, and sources associate him with the Accademia di San Luca in Rome, where his training is dated from 1870 to a diploma in 1884. He served with the cavalry during the Italian campaigns of the 1860s and 1870s, an experience that shaped his lifelong focus on military, equestrian, and Orientalist subject matter.
He showed Cavalli nella campagna in Berlin in 1880, the same year he was invited by Annibale Brugnoli to help paint the ceiling of the Teatro Costanzi in Rome, today the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma. In 1884 his large history painting Carica del Genova Cavalleria was well received in Turin, and he continued to exhibit in Venice and Rome. He also showed at an international exhibition in Melbourne, where he was awarded a silver medal, though the exact year of that award is not documented in available sources.
Gabani died in Rome on 12 October. Major sources disagree on the year: Italian Wikipedia, Artnet, MutualArt, Aste Arcadia, and the Art Renewal Center give 1899, while German Wikipedia, Christie's, Galleria Recta, Ottocento, Valutarte, and Pandolfini give 1900. No primary registry record or contemporary obituary has been located to settle the question, so both years should be treated as documented possibilities; this profile follows the later date on the strength of the auction-house sources. A Bonhams cataloguing note on one of his works states that he died in poverty in Rome, a detail that appears in that single source and has not been independently corroborated elsewhere.
Critical reception
Contemporary recognition of Gabani is documented mainly through exhibition results rather than through named critical writing: favorable notice in Berlin in 1880, in Turin in 1884, and a silver medal at an international exhibition in Melbourne. No verbatim, attributable quotation from a named critic in a major outlet has been located in available sources, so none is reproduced here. What can be said is that his reputation rested on technical facility with horses and military subjects and on an Orientalist strain that placed him within the broader European taste for scenes of Arab cavalry and desert warfare that circulated at the century's end.
Market
Gabani's works circulate exclusively on the secondary market. The Italian valuation site AcquistoArte reports his highest known auction price as EUR 136,050, achieved in 2015 by the oil on canvas Il Derby Reale, measuring 83 by 150 centimeters. That figure comes from a single aggregator and could not be matched to a specific auction house lot page, so the sale venue and exact date remain unverified. A separately documented Bonhams sale of Arab Warriors at Full Charge, held in New York on 29 April 2016, realized USD 21,875 including premium, well below the reported record. Given the sparse and sometimes conflicting public data, any figure describing Gabani's market should be treated as indicative rather than definitive until corroborated by a named auction house record.

Authentication and provenance
No catalogue raisonne.
No catalogue raisonne and no artist foundation or certification program has been identified. Gabani is a nineteenth century painter traded exclusively on the secondary market. Individual auction houses such as Christie's, Bonhams, and Pandolfini authenticate lots through connoisseurship and provenance research rather than through a central archive.

What collectors should know
Gabani is a case where basic facts require active verification rather than assumption. His death year is genuinely disputed among reputable sources, his highest reported auction price lacks a confirmed auction house, city, or exact date, and there is no catalogue raisonne or estate body to consult for authentication. No specific museum collection holding his work has been confirmed in available public sources; his output appears to reach the market primarily through general Italian and international auction houses and secondary market dealers rather than a dedicated estate. Anyone considering a purchase should treat provenance and the specific auction house's cataloguing as the primary basis for valuation, rather than any single reported record price.
