Mendel was born on 20 July 1822 in Hyncice (Heinzendorf), a village in Silesia then part of the Austrian Empire, now in the Czech Republic. He attended the village school, a Piarist boarding school in Lipnik nad Becvou for one year, and then the Gymnasium in Troppau (Opava), a six-year secondary school he completed in 1840. He went on to a two-year philosophical course in mathematics, physics, and philosophy at the Philosophical Institute in Olomouc, graduating in 1843.

Financial pressure and a wish to continue his education led Mendel to enter the Augustinian St. Thomas's Abbey in Brno in 1843. He studied theology at the Brno Episcopal Theological College from 1845 to 1848, and also took additional coursework in agriculture, fruit cultivation, and viniculture around 1845 to 1846. Ordained a priest, he later taught at a local secondary school and, from 1851 to 1853, took courses in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and zoology at the University of Vienna, studying under physicist Christian Doppler and mathematician Andreas von Ettingshausen.

Back in Brno, Mendel bred and cross-bred garden peas in the monastery garden between roughly 1856 and 1863, tracking traits across generations to arrive at what became known as the law of segregation and the law of independent assortment. He presented his findings to the Natural History Society of Brno in 1865 and published them in 1866 as "Versuche uber Pflanzen-Hybriden." The work drew little attention during his lifetime; he was elected abbot of St. Thomas's Abbey in 1868 and spent much of his later career on administrative duties, meteorological observation, and beekeeping. His paper was rediscovered around 1900 by botanists Hugo de Vries, Carl Correns, and Erich von Tschermak, who independently confirmed his ratios and brought his work into the emerging science of genetics.

Mendel fell ill with chronic kidney disease and died on 6 January 1884 in the monastery in Old Brno, Moravia, Austria-Hungary, now Brno, Czech Republic. He is buried in the Augustinian tomb at the Central Cemetery in Brno.

Mendel's reception has been scientific and historical rather than art-critical, since he produced no artwork for critics to review. His 1866 paper on plant hybrids attracted little notice for more than three decades. Around 1900, botanists Hugo de Vries, Carl Correns, and Erich von Tschermak independently rediscovered and confirmed his ratios; Correns, writing in 1905, credited Mendel with having reached results that would in time secure him an outstanding place among experimenters in heredity. Since that rediscovery, Mendel has been consistently described in encyclopedias and institutional histories, including Britannica and the Mendel Museum in Brno, as the founder of modern genetics, a status built entirely on his scientific work rather than any artistic output.
