Jacob Epstein

Jacob Epstein was born on 10 November 1880 on the Lower East Side of New York City, to Polish-Jewish immigrant parents. He studied art at the Art Students League of New York from roughly 1893 to 1901, including night classes at the Educational Alliance, before moving to Europe in 1902. He trained briefly at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris from October 1902 to March 1903, then at the Academie Julian from April 1903 to 1904. He settled in London in 1905 and became a naturalized British subject in 1907 (some sources cite 1911).

Epstein's early London career was defined by controversy and ambition in equal measure. He exhibited The Rock Drill, one of his most radical works, in an early London Group exhibition at the Goupil Gallery in 1915, and had his first solo exhibition at the Leicester Galleries in 1917, a gallery that continued to show his work throughout his career. He became known above all as a sculptor of monumental public commissions and searching portrait busts, output that the New York Times later summed up in the headline of his obituary as a "stormy career."

Official recognition arrived late in his life. Oxford University awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1953, the same year the Arts Council gave him a retrospective at the Tate Gallery, and he was made a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1954. Epstein died in London in August 1959. Sources disagree on the exact day: Tate and EBSCO Research Starters give 19 August, while Wikipedia, Encyclopaedia Britannica, and the Ben Uri Gallery give 21 August. The New York Times obituary of 22 August 1959 reported that he had died two days earlier of a coronary. He was 78, and was buried at Putney Vale Cemetery in London.

Epstein's contemporaries recognized him early as a disruptive force in British sculpture. The painter and critic Wyndham Lewis was among his early champions, according to Piano Nobile's account of his career, though a precise, verifiable quotation could not be confirmed in current sources. His public commissions repeatedly drew strong reaction from the press and public during his lifetime, the pattern the New York Times distilled into the phrase "stormy career" in its 1959 obituary. Institutional recognition followed a slower but steadier arc: the Tate's 1953 retrospective and later surveys at Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery in 1980 and a 1987 touring show confirmed his standing as a founding figure of modern sculpture in Britain, a status reinforced by holdings across the Tate, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, and the Centre Pompidou.

Piano Nobile in London describes itself on its own artist page as active in Epstein's secondary market, though independent confirmation of a formal or exclusive representation arrangement was not found. Major auction-market databases, including Artnet, Artprice, and Heritage Auctions, track sales under both "Jacob Epstein" and "Sir Jacob Epstein," and these refer to the same sculptor rather than a distinct artist. A single, well-documented all-time auction record for a specific work, price, house, and date could not be confirmed in current public sources, and no such figure should be treated as established without a traceable, dated sale.

Epstein's museum presence, spanning major collections in the United States and Britain, is far more settled than his auction record, and no catalogue raisonne has been identified to anchor authentication. Provenance and documentation matter more than usual as a result, and Piano Nobile's ongoing specialist handling of his market is currently the clearest reference point for collectors. Any claim about a specific record-setting sale for Epstein should be checked against a dated, sourced auction result rather than taken on faith.
