Jiang Shuo

Jiang Shuo was born in 1958 in Beijing, China. She studied sculpture at the Central Academy of Arts and Design in Beijing from 1978 to 1982, then completed postgraduate study there under Professor Zheng Ke from 1982 to 1985, becoming one of the first women in China to hold a postgraduate degree in the field. She went on to lecture at the same academy in the late 1980s.

In 1989 she received a scholarship to study in Austria and emigrated to Klagenfurt, later acquiring Austrian citizenship in 1993. She set up a studio in Beijing in 2006 and a second studio in Berlin in 2012, and she has since lived and worked between Beijing, Berlin, and Austria. Her first solo exhibition was held in China in 1985. She is best known for her Red Guards series, bronze figures begun in the early 2000s that draw on her own experience of the Cultural Revolution while satirizing the pursuit of money in contemporary China. She frequently exhibits jointly with sculptor Wu Shaoxiang.

No verbatim critical assessment from a named critic at a major outlet could be confirmed for Jiang Shuo. Gallery and exhibition texts consistently frame her work, often shown alongside Wu Shaoxiang, as driven by close observation of contemporary Chinese society and its rapid material transformation. Her inclusion in the 2021 group exhibition Contemporary Chinese Sculpture at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing and in the 2018 Art021 Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair, presented through Alisan Fine Arts, reflects sustained institutional and fair recognition within mainland China, alongside her longer running gallery programs in Hong Kong and Singapore.

Jiang Shuo's current gallery activity centers on Linda Gallery, which has staged duo exhibitions with Wu Shaoxiang in Singapore as recently as 2025 and 2026, and Alisan Fine Arts in Hong Kong, which maintains a detailed artist page and selected exhibition history for her going back to the early 1990s. Public auction data for her is sparse. The only fully documented public auction result identified is a bronze work titled Red Guard, also called Going Forward, which sold for EUR 3,700 at Auktionshaus Stahl in Germany; the exact sale date could not be confirmed. That same work's provenance includes an earlier appearance at a Christie's Asian Contemporary Art day sale in Hong Kong in November 2012. Given how little auction volume is publicly tracked for her, this figure should be read as the most concrete data point available rather than a confirmed career high.

Jiang Shuo's market runs mainly through her two representing galleries rather than through a deep or liquid auction history, so pricing outside a primary purchase should be treated with real caution. There is no catalogue raisonne, so provenance and authentication should be confirmed directly with Linda Gallery or Alisan Fine Arts. Her presence in museum and public collections, including the Hong Kong Museum of Art and the Copelouzos Art Museum in Athens, supports her institutional standing, but collectors should not extrapolate a broad price trend from the single public auction result currently on record.
