Why Johan Dijkstra matters
Johan Dijkstra was a co-founder of De Ploeg, the Groningen artists' circle that became the defining vehicle for Expressionism in the northern Netherlands, and one of the most versatile figures within it, working across painting, printmaking, stained glass, and mosaic. He matters to collectors less as a headline international name than as an anchor of a well-documented regional school, with an institutional record at the Groninger Museum and a market that, while modest in scale, is directly traceable to a single managing estate.

Biography
Johan Dijkstra was born in Groningen, Netherlands, on 23 December 1896. He completed the three-year HBS in Groningen before turning to art, taking afternoon classes at Academie Minerva in Groningen beginning in 1915 and continuing to 1919, where he studied under instructors including F.H. Bach. In 1919 he received a bronze academy medal for his work, and in 1919 to 1920 he studied briefly at the Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. In 1920 he completed the MO-akte tekenen, a teaching certificate in drawing for secondary schools.
In 1918 Dijkstra was a co-founder of De Ploeg, the Groningen circle of painters and graphic artists that became central to Dutch Expressionism outside the major cities, and he remained one of its leading figures for the rest of his career. Alongside painting and printmaking, he worked in stained glass and mosaic and also taught. His honors accumulated over a long career: the Willink van Collenprijs in 1925, appointment as a Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau in 1951, the Cultural Prize of the Province of Groningen in 1957, and an annual honorary stipend from the Dutch Ministry of Culture, Recreation and Social Work beginning in 1972.
Johan Dijkstra died in Groningen on 21 February 1978, at age 81. His estate is managed today by the Stichting Johan Dijkstra, the Johan Dijkstra Foundation.
Critical reception
Dijkstra is consistently described in Dutch sources as one of the most important artists to come out of Groningen in the twentieth century, and as central to De Ploeg's identity as a distinct regional voice within Dutch Expressionism. His reputation rests on his range: Groningen landscapes and village and street scenes in an expressionist palette, alongside less market-visible work in stained glass and mosaic for public and religious settings. No verbatim critical assessment from a named critic in a major outlet could be confirmed in the available research, so this section reflects the consistent institutional and dealer framing of his career rather than a quoted critical verdict.
Market
The highest recorded auction price for a work by Johan Dijkstra is EUR 79,500, paid for Farms in a Groningen landscape at Christie's Amsterdam on 17 June 2014. This places him firmly within a regional Dutch secondary market rather than the international blue-chip tier: his paintings, prints, and works on paper circulate mainly through Dutch auction houses and dealers, including Simonis & Buunk, which lists paintings by the artist for sale. No published catalogue raisonne has been identified, so buyers rely on the artist's estate and established dealers for authentication and provenance.

What collectors should know
Dijkstra's auction record is thin by international standards, with a confirmed high of EUR 79,500 and generally modest results below that level, so any single sale should be read in the context of a small and largely domestic Dutch market rather than as a broad trend line. There is no published catalogue raisonne, which puts extra weight on provenance tied to the Stichting Johan Dijkstra and on established Dutch auction houses and dealers. Because his output spans painting, prints, stained glass, and mosaic, collectors should also expect prices to vary considerably by medium and subject, with Groningen landscape paintings representing the most liquid and best-documented segment of his market.
