Johannes Kepler

Johannes Kepler was not a painter, sculptor, or printmaker. He appears in this survey of historically significant figures because his surviving handwritten scientific manuscripts and early printed books now trade in the same very high value market as fine art, at major auction houses. He is also a benchmark name in the history of science: the astronomer who formulated the three laws of planetary motion, whose autograph papers on planetary motion have sold for more than a million dollars.

Johannes Kepler was born on 27 December 1571 in the Free Imperial City of Weil der Stadt, in Wurttemberg, in what is now Germany. He attended Latin school in Leonberg, then the Protestant seminary schools at Adelberg from 1584 and Maulbronn from 1586, before entering the University of Tubingen, where he took his baccalaureate in 1588 and earned his Magister Artium in 1591.

At Tubingen he studied under the astronomer Michael Maestlin, who introduced him to the heliocentric model of Nicolaus Copernicus. Kepler later served as imperial mathematician to Rudolf II in Prague, where he inherited and worked from the planetary observations of Tycho Brahe, and afterward held posts in Linz. His three laws of planetary motion, set out chiefly in Astronomia nova, published in 1609, and Harmonice Mundi, published in 1619, described planets moving in ellipses rather than circles and established a fixed relationship between orbital period and distance from the sun. He also wrote Mysterium cosmographicum and the Epitome Astronomiae Copernicanae.

Kepler died on 15 November 1630 in the Free Imperial City of Regensburg, now in Germany, during a journey undertaken to collect money owed to him. Major reference sources, including Britannica, MacTutor, and Space.com, attribute his death to a fever following a short illness.

Kepler's standing rests on the history of science rather than art criticism, so the usual gallery and museum critical record does not apply here. Reference sources, including Britannica, MacTutor, and the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, uniformly credit him as the discoverer of the three laws of planetary motion, a foundation later built upon by Isaac Newton's theory of gravitation. His legacy is also marked by a long list of honors: induction into the International Space Hall of Fame, and the attachment of his name to a lunar crater, a Martian crater, the asteroid 1134 Kepler, the 1604 supernova known as Kepler's Supernova, NASA's Kepler space observatory, and the Johannes Kepler University of Linz. No named art critic in a major outlet has published a verbatim assessment of Kepler as an "artist," because no such body of artwork exists. What the record shows, consistently, is recognition of Kepler the scientist.

There is no auction market for paintings, drawings, or sculpture by Johannes Kepler, because none exist. The market that carries his name is the market for his autograph scientific manuscripts and early printed editions of his books, sold through the books and manuscripts and history of science departments of major auction houses.

The record price is USD 1,008,375, paid at Bonhams in New York on 25 October 2022, for an autograph Latin manuscript in which Kepler calculates the relative velocity of the Moon and Sun and references Tycho Brahe's Tabulae and the work of Copernicus. Bonhams' own press release for that same October 2022 sale also reported a price of USD 882,375, described at the time as a world record, for a Kepler manuscript involving logarithms in planetary orbit calculations. Published accounts do not agree on whether this figure reports the same lot at hammer price rather than the total with premium, or a second manuscript sold the same day, so it is noted here with that caveat. Printed first editions have sold for considerably less: a copy of Astronomia nova from the Owen Gingerich Astronomical Library brought USD 327,600 at Christie's New York, and a copy of Mysterium cosmographicum from the same sale brought USD 277,200. That per-title figure for Mysterium cosmographicum was substantially exceeded on 5 February 2026, when Christie's sold another copy of the same 1596 title for USD 889,000 against a presale estimate of USD 8,000 to 120,000. No gallery, dealer, or estate represents Kepler's material commercially. Institutions such as the Kepler Museum in Weil der Stadt, the Keplerhaus in Regensburg, and the Musee de l'Oeuvre Notre-Dame in Strasbourg hold portraits and related material, but these are museum, not gallery, holdings.

Anyone drawn to Kepler is really a collector of rare manuscripts and early scientific printing, not of fine art, and the two markets behave differently. Supply is essentially fixed and extremely thin: surviving autograph manuscripts are rare, and each one that reaches auction is a singular object rather than part of a comparable series, so prices depend heavily on the specific document's content, condition, and provenance. There is no catalogue raisonne, because Kepler produced no catalogued body of artworks. Authentication instead rests on paleographic and archival scholarship performed by auction house specialists and by research institutions holding his correspondence and papers. Buyers should expect any high value Kepler manuscript to come with that kind of institutional paper trail rather than a certificate from an artist's estate or foundation.
