Katharina Grosse

Katharina Grosse is one of the leading painters of her generation to move abstraction off the canvas and into architecture and landscape, using an industrial spray gun to cover walls, floors, rubble, trees, and fabric in unbroken fields of color. For a collector, she represents a rare case of a living painter with deep institutional validation across Europe, the Americas, and Asia, whose market is still comparatively young and thinly documented at auction relative to her museum standing.

Katharina Grosse was born in 1961 in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany. She studied at the Kunstakademie Munster from 1982 to 1986 and at the Kunstakademie Dusseldorf from 1986 to 1990.

Grosse became known for large-scale, site-specific interventions built with an industrial spray gun, applying saturated acrylic color across entire rooms, facades, and outdoor terrain, often folding in furniture, soil, and found materials as part of the painted surface. She was a professor at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weissensee from roughly 2000 to 2009 and has taught at the Kunstakademie Dusseldorf, where she held a professorship from 2010 to 2018. Since October 2021 she has served as chairwoman of the board of KUNST-WERKE BERLIN. She lives and works in Berlin and New Zealand.

Her exhibition history spans major institutions internationally, including a large on-site painting project at Hamburger Bahnhof, Museum fur Gegenwart in Berlin (2020), a solo show at the Baltimore Museum of Art the same year, a survey of her studio paintings organized by the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum at Washington University in St. Louis (2022 to 2023), and the project "Splinter" at Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris (2022). She has also shown in major group contexts including the Bienal de Sao Paulo (2002).

Grosse's work is consistently framed around the physical and conceptual expansion of painting beyond the canvas. Descriptions of her practice in museum, gallery, and exhibition-listing texts, including one from Artforum, consistently characterize her as known for large-scale, site-specific interventions built from expansive bursts of pure color applied with an industrial spray gun, framing her practice as sculptural environments as much as paintings. The critical throughline is her insistence that color and paint can function as volume and space rather than surface alone, a position she has reinforced in her own writing and interviews.

Grosse's primary market runs through major international galleries, with Gagosian, Galerie Max Hetzler, and White Cube each presenting her work in recent years. Her secondary market at auction is comparatively thin and the available public data is inconsistent: one market aggregator cites a high auction record of approximately EUR 400,000 at Ketterer Kunst in 2022, while another lists a different, higher figure in US dollars, and neither source specifies the exact work sold, the sale city, or the precise date. Individual lot results for Untitled works at Lempertz and Phillips have ranged from roughly EUR 50,000 to about GBP 277,200, mostly below the approximately EUR 400,000 Ketterer Kunst figure, though the higher end approaches other reported mid-tier auction results.

Grosse's institutional footprint, spanning MoMA, the Centre Pompidou, Fondation Louis Vuitton, and numerous European and North American museums, is far more developed than her public auction record. Reported auction highs vary meaningfully between data providers and lack confirmed details on the specific work, date, and sale location, so collectors should treat any single headline auction figure with caution until it can be verified against a primary auction house record. There is no confirmed catalogue raisonne, which places extra weight on gallery-based verification and provenance research for any work considered for acquisition.
