Why Katherine Bradford matters
Katherine Bradford is a painter who built a major late-career reputation from a consistent, instantly recognizable subject: swimmers, floating figures, and superheroes rendered in luminous, simplified color. She took an unusually long road to prominence, only beginning graduate study in her forties, and her market and museum standing have grown steadily over the past two decades rather than arriving in a single early breakthrough. For collectors, she represents a case of institutional recognition and gallery representation broadening well ahead of a still-developing secondary market.

Biography
Katherine Bradford, born in 1942 in New York, New York, earned a BA from Bryn Mawr College in 1964 and later returned to art school, completing an MFA at the State University of New York, Purchase, in 1987. That gap, and the decades of painting in between, shaped a body of work that critics often read as searching and self-taught in spirit even after formal training.
Her paintings are known for flattened, glowing figures set against fields of saturated color: swimmers seen from above, ocean liners, superheroes, and other floating or drifting bodies that suggest both vulnerability and buoyancy. Her profile expanded through the 2010s and 2020s with solo museum exhibitions, including FOCUS: Katherine Bradford at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth in 2017 and participation in the Prospect.4 New Orleans Triennial the same year. A major retrospective, Flying Woman: The Paintings of Katherine Bradford, opened at the Portland Museum of Art in Maine in 2022 and traveled to the Frye Art Museum in Seattle in 2023.
She lives with her spouse, Jane O'Wyatt, dividing her time between a studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and Brunswick, Maine. As of mid-2026 she continues to exhibit actively, with a solo show at Haverkampf Leistenschneider in Berlin planned for that year's Gallery Weekend.
Critical reception
Critical attention to Bradford grew steadily rather than arriving in one early breakthrough, tracking her emergence as a painter who found her signature voice relatively late and then deepened it with age. Coverage tied to her 2022 Portland Museum of Art retrospective, including the museum's own feature and her subsequent Bowdoin College honorary degree, framed her "mother" and family-themed paintings as meditations on legacy, care, and what it means to be remembered, while other outlets have written about the critical and market demand building around her luminous, simplified figuration. The recurring critical thread is her use of glowing, flattened figures to carry emotional and psychological weight that abstraction alone might not reach.
Market
Bradford's market includes several well-documented results from 2022 and 2023. One gallery source cites Six Swimmer Ocean Swim as her auction record at USD 163,800, sold at Sotheby's in New York in 2022, though the exact calendar date is not confirmed and a separate market source lists a markedly lower price for a work of the same title, so this figure should be treated as the best-documented but not fully reconciled result. Other confirmed results include Swimmer, 4 Lifeguards, which brought USD 151,200 at Christie's in November 2022 and has separately been described as the highest hammer price tracked for the artist, and Night Clock, which sold for GBP 114,300 (about EUR 130,000) against a GBP 50,000 to 70,000 estimate at Phillips London on 3 March 2023. Her auction footprint remains modest relative to her museum profile, with results concentrated in day and online sales rather than evening sales, and with a gallery-driven primary market through CANADA in New York and her other representing galleries.

What collectors should know
Bradford's institutional support is broad and well documented, spanning the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Menil Collection, and a network of international galleries, but her auction market is comparatively thin and shows some inconsistency between sources on individual results, so single sale prices should be read with care rather than as a stable price curve. No catalogue raisonne exists, which places extra weight on gallery provenance, particularly through CANADA and Kaufmann Repetto. Collectors should also note that market research on this artist has not identified any other market-active artist sharing her name; she occasionally signs works with the shortened form "K Bradford," which is not a separate identity.
