Kendell Geers

Kendell Geers is a South African-born, Brussels-based conceptual artist whose confrontational, politically charged work has made him a fixture of the international biennial and museum circuit for more than three decades. Working across installation, performance, sculpture, readymades, photography, video, and painting, Geers built his practice on the tensions of apartheid-era South Africa and has carried that vocabulary into two editions of Documenta, three appearances at the Venice Biennale, and a major 2013 retrospective at Haus der Kunst, Munich. For collectors, he represents a case in which deep institutional and gallery validation has developed well ahead of a legible public auction market.

Kendell Geers was born in May 1968 in the Johannesburg area of South Africa; sources describe the specific suburb variously as Germiston or Leondale, both on the East Rand. In 1985, after finishing school, he enrolled in the Fine Arts program at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, reportedly in part to avoid conscription into the South African Defence Force, and completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts there in 1988.

Geers came to prominence through confrontational, body- and object-based works engaging apartheid, violence, and taboo, staging actions such as urinating into a replica of Marcel Duchamp's Fountain and incorporating materials like razor wire, electric fencing, and broken glass. His first major museum exhibition, Heart of Darkness, opened at the Iziko South African National Gallery in Cape Town in 1993, the same year he appeared in the Venice Biennale and, as a conceptual gesture, officially changed his stated date of birth to May 1968.

Through the 1990s and 2000s he built an extensive biennial history, including the Johannesburg Biennale, the Havana Biennale, the Istanbul Biennial, the Lyon Biennale, and the Sao Paulo Biennial, alongside Documenta 11 in Kassel in 2002. His touring solo exhibition Irrespektiv opened at SMAK in Ghent in 2007 and traveled to BALTIC in Newcastle and MAC Lyon. In 2013, Haus der Kunst in Munich mounted the retrospective Kendell Geers 1988 to 2012, and he returned to Documenta for a second time in 2017 (Documenta 14, Kassel), the same year he again appeared at the Venice Biennale. He left South Africa and eventually settled in Brussels, Belgium, where he continues to live and work; his most recently confirmed public project is the June 2024 launch of his book Duchamp's Endgame at Wilde Gallery, Basel.

Geers is consistently framed by galleries and museums as a central figure of post-apartheid conceptualism, an artist who uses confrontation and appropriated, often violent materials to force a reckoning with power, complicity, and social codes. His inclusion across major recurring international exhibitions, from the Johannesburg and Havana Biennales of the 1990s through two editions of Documenta and three Venice Biennale appearances, has been treated by institutions as evidence of sustained relevance rather than a single breakthrough moment. No exact, attributable critical quotation from a named critic in a major outlet could be verified for this profile; the available material consists largely of institutional and gallery biographical texts rather than signed criticism.

Public auction data for Geers could not be independently verified from current research. No confirmed sale results, with work, price, currency, auction house, and date, could be established for this profile, and no all-time auction record is reported here as a result. His market activity to date appears to run primarily through gallery placement, museum acquisition, and biennial participation rather than a documented secondary auction history.

Geers has an extensive institutional and biennial footprint, but a specific, verified list of permanent museum collections could not be confirmed from current public sources, and his public auction record could not be confirmed at all. There is no known catalogue raisonne, so provenance and authenticity should be confirmed through his current galleries or the artist's studio. Given the gap between his exhibition history and the depth of public market data, collectors should verify current pricing and collection holdings directly with his representing galleries.
