Why Klavdii Lebedev matters
Klavdii Lebedev is a documented figure of late Imperial Russian painting, a member of the Peredvizhniki (The Wanderers) whose historical genre scenes of boyars and tsarist Russia earned him academic honors and a place in the Tretyakov Gallery's founding-era collection. For a collector, he represents a well-attributed but market-thin 19th-century Russian academic painter, whose works appear at auction only occasionally and whose value rests on museum provenance rather than a modern secondary market.

Biography
Klavdii Vasilyevich Lebedev was born in Moscow in 1852 to a peasant family. He studied first at the Stroganov School in Moscow in the early 1870s, then transferred in 1875 to the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, where he trained for six years under Vasily Perov, Evgraf Sorokin, and Vladimir Makovsky, completing his art education in 1881.
That same year, his painting "Boyar Girl Leaving Church" won a large silver medal at the Imperial Academy of Arts and earned him the title of class artist, third degree. From 1877 he exhibited regularly with his school, with the Peredvizhniki, and at the Imperial Academy, formally joining The Wanderers as a member in 1891. He taught drawing at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture from 1890 to 1894, then served as a professor at the Higher Art School of the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg from 1894 to 1898.
His painting "The Death of Tsar Fyodor Alekseyevich" earned him the title of academician of painting in 1897, and his work was shown at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago and the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris, where he won a bronze medal. He was elected a full member of the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1906. Lebedev specialized in historical genre paintings of boyars and Russian noblewomen and also produced church and religious commissions; his "Boyars' Wedding" was purchased by Pavel Tretyakov for what is now the State Tretyakov Gallery. He died in Moscow in 1916; sources place the date in the last third of September or early October depending on whether the Julian or Gregorian calendar is used, but the year and city of death are consistently documented.
Critical reception
Contemporary Russian critics associated Lebedev's boyar-themed paintings with technical virtuosity in rendering costume and material detail. A Christie's saleroom catalogue note on a Lebedev painting cites a 1910 notice in the Moscow press, Golos Moskvy (The Voice of Moscow), praising his rendering of embroidery, jewellery, and fabric, though the exact wording of that notice is not independently confirmed here. Biographical sources also note that critic Vladimir Stasov responded favorably to his historical genre work, and that Pavel Tretyakov's purchase of "Boyars' Wedding" for his Moscow gallery served as an early institutional endorsement, though the exact wording of Stasov's comments is not preserved in the sources reviewed here.
Market
Lebedev's market is thin and largely confined to specialist Russian art sales at international auction houses. The highest price identified in available auction records is GBP 3,750 (including premium), reported at Bonhams London on 5 July 2016 for "A pair of young women in traditional dress" (a pair of works); comprehensive auction-database coverage for the artist could not be independently confirmed, so this figure should be read as the best-documented result rather than a verified all-time record. There is no catalogue raisonne and no current commercial gallery or estate representation has been identified; his paintings surface periodically at Russian-art specialist sales at houses such as Christie's, Bonhams, and MacDougall's, and are otherwise held mainly in museum collections.

What collectors should know
Lebedev's auction footprint is small, and the highest price identified in available records, GBP 3,750 at Bonhams London in 2016, could not be independently confirmed as his definitive all-time high, so any single sale result should be read as a data point from a thin market rather than a stable price trend. There is no catalogue raisonne, and with no current gallery or estate representation identified, buyers should rely on museum provenance and the cataloguing of established auction houses such as Christie's and Bonhams to authenticate works. Cataloguers should also be aware that his exact birth and death days are given inconsistently across reference sources, a common feature of pre-1918 Russian biographical records that mix Julian and Gregorian dating.
