Kuwai Hana

Kuwai Hana (クワイ華, also rendered Hana Kuwai; family name Kuwai, artist name Hana) was born in 1964 in Tokyo. His exact birth date has not been documented in available sources. According to a profile in THE RAKE JAPAN, after graduating from high school he became a nurse on his father's advice, the same profession his mother had once held, then worked as a truck driver before moving into importing Harley-Davidson parts. In 1998 he founded the custom motorcycle shop BAD LAND, reportedly in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture.

In 2023 he launched the art brand UNDULATION, shifting his practice toward gold leaf and mixed-media paintings built around mandala and dragon imagery. He took the artist name Hana (華) in tribute to a late pet cat. In May 2025 he opened Sympanist, also presented as UNDULATION Boutique, in Ebisu, Tokyo, a space he uses as his primary presentation and sales platform. A 2026 profile describes him as continuing to create and sharing his life with six cats.
