Lancelot Ribeiro

Lanceloté José Belarmino Ribeiro was born in Bombay, British India, on 28 November 1933, to a Goan Catholic family. He was schooled at St Xavier's High School for Boys, Bombay, and then at St Mary's Senior Cambridge School in Mount Abu.

In 1950 he followed his half-brother, the painter F. N. Souza, to London, initially to study accountancy while living with Souza's family. He abandoned that path for life-drawing classes at St Martin's School of Art from 1951 to 1953, then returned to Bombay in 1955 and became a full-time artist in 1958. His first solo exhibition, at the Bombay Artist Aid Centre in 1961, sold out and led to a major commission for Tata Iron and Steel. In 1962 he was nominated for the All India Gold Medal, and his work was included in the touring group show Ten Indian Painters, seen across Europe and North America.

He left India for London in 1962. He co-founded the Indian Painters' Collective UK in 1963 and helped organize Six Indian Painters at India House in 1964. His exhibition record over the following decades included a solo show at the Everyman Gallery, Hampstead, in 1965, and a 1986 retrospective at Leicester Museum and Art Gallery covering work from 1960 to 1986. He continued painting in London until his death there on 25 December 2010, at age 77.

Art UK's account of his career notes that he "innovated excitingly until his death at 77 in 2010," a judgment consistent with the broader view of Ribeiro as a restless experimenter who moved between abstraction and figuration across six decades and was part of the wave of Indian artists working in postwar Britain alongside his half-brother F. N. Souza. His early use of PVA-based paint in Britain is frequently cited as a distinguishing technical contribution. The 2013 posthumous retrospective Restless Ribeiro: An Indian Artist in Britain at Asia House, London, together with continued programming from Grosvenor Gallery and Aicon Art and a 2024 Google Doodle, has driven a broader reassessment of his standing relative to better-known peers of his generation.

Ribeiro's market was thin for most of his career and much of the period since his death, with results largely in the tens of thousands of dollars. That changed on 7 March 2026, when Landscape at Noon (1964) sold for GBP 516,000 (about USD 689,800) at Phillips in London, against an estimate of GBP 100,000 to 150,000. Phillips described the result as a new auction record for the artist; the previous high was Untitled (Townscape) (1964), which made USD 69,500 at AstaGuru in December 2023. Auction databases sometimes catalogue the artist as "Lance Ribeiro," a shortened variant of the same name; collectors and researchers should search both forms.

Ribeiro's auction history is short and until recently sat well below six figures, so the 2026 Phillips result for Landscape at Noon is a single, large outlier rather than evidence of a deep or liquid market; collectors should treat any single data point with caution given how few comparable sales exist. There is no published catalogue raisonne, which puts extra weight on provenance and on the two organizations closest to the estate, Grosvenor Gallery in London and Aicon Art in New York. Auction platforms sometimes list the artist as "Lance Ribeiro," so a full price history search should check both name forms.
