Leelee Kimmel

Leelee Kimmel is a contemporary American painter whose work sits at an unusual intersection of celebrity biography and studio practice. She is represented by Almine Rech, a gallery with a substantial international program, and her work has begun to appear at auction and in institutional collections. For collectors, she represents an early-stage market built on gallery support and a distinctive personal story rather than on a long, deep secondary-market history.

Leelee Kimmel was born Liliane Rudabet Gloria Elsveta Sobieski on June 10, 1983, in New York City. Under the name Leelee Sobieski, she built a film and television career from childhood, appearing in productions including Eyes Wide Shut, Never Been Kissed, and Joan of Arc. She graduated from Trevor Day School in New York in 2001 and went on to attend Brown University, where she studied visual art and literature, though she left before completing a degree.

In 2010 she married the fashion designer Adam Kimmel and began using her married name, Leelee Kimmel, as she shifted her focus toward a full-time visual art practice in the years that followed. Her public debut as a painter came with the solo show Channels at The Journal Gallery in Brooklyn in 2018, the same year she also showed Wormhole at Simon Lee Gallery in London. She went on to exhibit with Almine Rech, including the solo shows Nuwar in Paris in 2019 and Night Ride in Shanghai in 2022, as well as further solo presentations at The Journal Gallery and group exhibitions in New York, Tokyo, and Suzhou. She lives and works in New York.

Critical attention to Kimmel's work has often grappled with her transition from a well-known acting career to painting. A 2024 conversation with critic Phong H. Bui in the Brooklyn Rail, tied to her show with Almine Rech, engaged with her painting on its own terms, treating her as an active participant in contemporary abstraction rather than primarily as a former actress.

Kimmel's auction footprint is thin but present. Her highest recorded auction price is for After, an acrylic on canvas that sold for HKD 441,000 (about USD 56,900) at Phillips Hong Kong in June 2022, above its high estimate. Her work has entered at least one named public collection, the Longlati Foundation in Shanghai. Given the small number of confirmed sales, any single result should be read as an early data point rather than an established trend.

Kimmel's auction history is limited to a small number of confirmed sales, and no catalogue raisonne exists to anchor authentication. Her market is currently defined more by gallery representation, principally Almine Rech, than by a deep or liquid secondary market. Collectors should treat her single confirmed auction record as an early indicator rather than a stable benchmark, and should verify works directly through her representing gallery given the thinness of the public sales record.
