Leonid Kabacek

Leonid Vasilievich Kabachek was born on 31 December 1924 in Makeevka, in the Donetsk Province of the Ukrainian SSR. He began formal art training at the 1st Leningrad Children's Art School from 1939 to 1941, then attended the Secondary Art School attached to the Academy of Arts in Leningrad under V. V. Sokolov, in two periods, 1941 to 1942 and 1945 to 1947. He entered the painting faculty of the Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture named after I. E. Repin in 1947 and completed his diploma in 1953 in the workshop of Boris Ioganson. From 1953 to 1957 he continued in the postgraduate creative workshop of Aleksandr Gerasimov.

He joined the Leningrad Union of Artists in 1955 and began exhibiting in group exhibitions of Leningrad artists from 1953. In 1968 he was named an Honored Artist of the RSFSR. From 1970 he headed a department at the Leningrad Pedagogical Institute named after A. I. Herzen (later the Russian State Pedagogical University), holding the rank of professor. He died on 4 February 2002 in Saint Petersburg and was buried at the cemetery of the crematorium there.
