Leonid Pasternak

Leonid Pasternak was one of late Imperial Russia's most sought-after portraitists, whose illustrations of Tolstoy's novels earned him a medal at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle. He taught for roughly a quarter-century at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, helped found the Union of Russian Artists, and is remembered today both for his own genre paintings and portraits and as the father of Nobel laureate Boris Pasternak. For collectors, he represents a historical, museum-anchored career with a thin and only partially documented secondary market.

Leonid Osipovich Pasternak, born Isaak Iosifovich Pasternak, was born in Odessa in 1862 to a poor Orthodox Jewish innkeeper's family. He attended gymnasium schooling in Odessa and took early drawing classes at the Odessa School of Drawing before completing his secondary education in the early 1880s. He briefly studied medicine at Moscow University in 1881 and 1882, then transferred to the law faculty of Novorossiysk (Odessa) University from 1883, a move biographers link to his wish to study art in Munich. He trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from roughly 1882 to 1886.

Returning to Russia, his 1894 canvas Students before an Examination won first prize at the World Exhibition in Munich. He began teaching at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in 1894 and remained there for about twenty-five years, introducing what contemporaries called a moderate impressionism into the curriculum. He illustrated Tolstoy's novels and was awarded a medal for that work at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle. He was a founding member of the Union of Russian Artists and was later recognized as a member of the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg.

Pasternak left Russia for Berlin in 1921 and relocated to England in 1938, settling in Oxford, where he continued to work and wrote his memoirs. He died in Oxford on 31 May 1945. His son, the poet and novelist Boris Pasternak, later won the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Pasternak is consistently described in reference sources as a leading figure of Russian Impressionism and one of the most notable portrait and genre painters of his era, prized for bringing an impressionist lightness of touch into Russian academic training through his long tenure at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. His posthumous reputation has been sustained through museum exhibitions rather than trade press commentary: a two-year United States touring retrospective in 1988 to 1990 introduced his work to American audiences, and subsequent shows at the Ashmolean Museum, the Graves Art Gallery in Sheffield, and the Pushkin Museum's Museum of Private Collections have kept his paintings and drawings in public view. No verified verbatim critical assessment from a named critic in a major outlet could be confirmed for this profile.

Pasternak's auction market is thin and largely confined to Russian and European art sales rather than a continuous international secondary market. Public auction aggregators do not show a verifiable, independently confirmed all-time record with an exact work, price, house, and date; one industry database (MutualArt) reports realized prices reaching as high as approximately USD 176,644 for paintings, though the underlying sale could not be independently verified for this profile. His works surface periodically at Russian-art specialist sales and through dealers, with provenance frequently traced to the Pasternak Trust or to the major Russian museums that hold the bulk of his output.

Authentication and provenance

No catalogue raisonne.

No catalogue raisonne has been identified for this artist. The Pasternak Trust maintains the family archive, a published chronology, and provenance documentation for known works, and auction houses cite the Trust when cataloguing lots. Attribution otherwise relies on provenance history and the museum holdings listed above.

Pasternak's market sits well below his museum standing: he is held by the Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the Pushkin Museum, the Musee d'Orsay, Tate, the British Museum, and the Ashmolean, yet his recorded auction results are few and modest by comparison. No catalogue raisonne has been identified, so provenance and the documentation held by the Pasternak Trust are the primary tools for verifying a given work. Given how few high-value sales exist in the public record, and since no single all-time auction record could be independently confirmed for this profile, collectors should treat any reported result as a data point from a small and infrequently traded market rather than as evidence of a broad, liquid trend.
