Leslie Hunter

George Leslie Hunter was born on 7 August 1877 in Rothesay, on the Isle of Bute, Scotland, and was christened George Hunter before adopting the name Leslie professionally. His only documented schooling was at Rothesay Academy. He received a brief course of informal painting lessons from a family acquaintance around age thirteen, but had no subsequent formal art school or academy training. In 1892 his family emigrated to California, where he worked in San Francisco as a magazine illustrator through his teens and twenties, teaching himself to paint alongside that work. Much of his early output was destroyed in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.

A trip to Paris around 1904 exposed him to French painting and helped set the course of his mature style, which paired everyday still-life subjects, especially fruit and flowers, with the bright, structural color associated with the Colourists. He subsequently based himself in Glasgow and traveled repeatedly to France, including extended stays that produced landscapes of Fife and the Largo coast, and later a notable body of work made at Loch Lomond. He exhibited alongside Peploe and Cadell in Scotland and London through the 1920s, cementing his place within the group that later became known as the Scottish Colourists.

Hunter died on 7 December 1931 at the Claremont Nursing Home in Glasgow, Scotland, at age 54. The documented cause was cardiac failure due to blood poisoning following an unsuccessful gallbladder operation.

Institutional and reference sources consistently place Hunter within the historically significant group known as the Scottish Colourists. Art UK's profile of him is titled "George Leslie Hunter: a brilliant Scottish Colourist," and Tate and the National Galleries of Scotland likewise frame him as one of the four painters, alongside Peploe, Cadell, and Fergusson, whose Fauve-influenced color defined a distinct strand of early twentieth century Scottish painting. Praise for his work centers particularly on his still lifes of fruit and flowers.

Hunter's best fully documented auction result is Still life with roses in a Chinese blue and white jar, which sold for USD 120,500 as the headline lot of Bonhams's Scottish Art sale in Edinburgh on 15 May 2024. Market-data aggregators such as MutualArt report a higher realized price of up to USD 640,722 for a Hunter painting, but the specific work, auction house, and sale date behind that figure are not identified in the sources reviewed, so it should be treated as an unverified upper bound rather than a confirmed record. His work continues to trade regularly through Scottish and London salerooms, including Bonhams, Christie's, Sotheby's, and Lyon & Turnbull, as well as through dealers such as The Fine Art Society.

There is no published catalogue raisonne for Hunter, and no centralized estate or single authenticating body has been identified. Verification currently rests with auction house and gallery specialists and cross-reference to known exhibition and museum histories. Public sources are not fully consistent on his birth year, with most major references giving 1877 but at least one gallery source citing 1879, so collectors should treat exact early biographical dates with some caution even though his death date and cause are well documented. His auction volume is modest compared with Peploe, Cadell, or Fergusson, which means a single strong or weak result can move his apparent market more than it would for an artist with deeper trading history.
