Li Songsong

Li Songsong was born in 1973 in Beijing, China. He attended the Subsidiary School of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 1992, and went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts in oil painting from the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in 1996.

Li's paintings are built from found photographs, newspaper images, and archival material documenting people and events from modern and contemporary Chinese history. He applies oil paint in thick, high relief passages, often working across grid-like panel divisions, so that the surface itself carries as much weight as the image. Pace Gallery, his longtime representing gallery, describes the work as engaging the people, events, and themes of modern and contemporary Chinese history through the fragmentary nature of images and memory. In his more recent work, shown in Los Angeles and New York in 2024 and 2025, he has pushed further into abstraction while keeping history painting as his stated frame. He continues to live and work in Beijing.

Li Songsong's reputation rests on his treatment of found historical imagery as physical material rather than illustration, and on institutional exhibitions that trace a consistent arc: inclusion in early survey shows of Chinese contemporary art such as Saatchi Gallery's The Revolution Continues (2008), a mid-career museum survey, Historical Materialism, that traveled from Museo d'Arte Moderna di Bologna (2015) to the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden (2016), and a 2018 solo exhibition, Non-Revision, at the Guangdong Museum of Art. His work has since appeared in institutional collection exhibitions, including UCCA's Common Ground (2022) and M+'s M+ Sigg Collection: Another Story (2023 to 2025) in Hong Kong. The through line in curatorial framing is his handling of memory: paintings built from photographs of specific historical moments, but roughened, layered, and partly obscured by the painting process itself.

Li Songsong's primary market runs through Pace Gallery, which has staged his solo exhibitions in Los Angeles (2024) and New York (2025) and is his long-term representing gallery.
