Artist

Li Tianbing

Chinese, b. 1974

Painting · Watercolor

Li Tianbing, also published in the West as Tianbing Li, is a Chinese-born painter who turned his own family's black-and-white childhood photographs into a distinct visual language of grey-toned, faintly ghostly portraiture. His work reads generational memory of China's one-child-policy era through a painting practice trained equally in a Beijing political-science classroom and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. For collectors, he represents an artist with genuine institutional standing, his work sits in M+, the China National Museum of Fine Arts, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and other public collections, even though his auction market remains small and, on the available record, inconsistently documented across platforms.

Li Tianbing was born in Guilin, in southern China, in 1974. He first trained in International Politics at an institute in Beijing before leaving that path for art. At about age 22 he moved to Paris, where he studied at the Ecole nationale superieure des Beaux-Arts, graduating in 2002 with distinction after roughly six years of study.

His paintings and watercolors draw on childhood photographs taken by his parents, reworked into grey-toned portraits and imagined family scenes that explore the one-child policy, the tension between communism and consumer capitalism, and the meeting of Chinese and European painting traditions. He held his first Hong Kong solo exhibition, A Game as a Pretense of Being, at the Pao Galleries of the Hong Kong Arts Centre in 2011, and had shown earlier in New York with the exhibition Me and My Brother at L&M Arts (now Mnuchin Gallery) in 2008. He went on to show at Cuturi Gallery in Singapore and at international fairs including Art Central Hong Kong and ZONAMACO Mexico City, both in 2019, and more recently at Opera Gallery Singapore with Me and the Tree in 2024.

Sources describe his current base slightly differently: some galleries say he lives and works between Paris and Los Angeles, others between Beijing and Paris. Both descriptions recur in current gallery material, and no source suggests he has stopped working; there is no documented death date, obituary, or memorial notice for the artist as of this writing, and he should be treated as living.

Independent, named critical commentary on Li Tianbing in major outlets is thin in the available record; most of the descriptive language about his work comes from gallery and exhibition texts rather than bylined criticism. Those gallery texts consistently frame him around a few recurring ideas: reworked childhood photography, the one-child policy and its effect on family structure and memory, and a deliberate synthesis of Chinese and European painting traditions. His presence in public collections such as the China National Museum of Fine Arts in Beijing and the other institutions listed above points to steady curatorial interest even where independent critical writing is sparse.

Li Tianbing's auction footprint is small and the record price is not cleanly documented. The market-data aggregator MutualArt reports USD 369,777 as the highest realized price for a painting by the artist, but the work's title, the currency of the original sale, the auction house, and the exact sale date are not documented in available sources. Other Phillips results for named works are considerably lower, running from about USD 7,740 to USD 25,400, and Artprice records around 149 auction lots for the artist overall, almost entirely paintings. Given this spread and the missing detail on the top result, collectors should treat any single reported "record" for this artist with caution rather than as a settled benchmark.

Authentication and provenance

No catalogue raisonne.

No catalogue raisonne or certificate-of-authenticity program is documented for this artist. Works have been sold through L&M Arts (now Mnuchin Gallery) and Galerie Loft historically, and are currently shown through JD Malat Gallery and Opera Gallery; buyers should rely on gallery and provenance documentation rather than a published catalogue.

Li Tianbing's representation has shifted over his career: early gallery support came from L&M Arts in New York and Galerie Loft in Paris, and current gallery activity is centered on JD Malat Gallery in London and Opera Gallery internationally. There is no published catalogue raisonne, so authentication relies on gallery and provenance records rather than a scholarly reference catalogue. Because auction data for this artist is limited in volume and the reported top price lacks a confirmed house and date, collectors should look closely at the specific work, its exhibition and gallery history, and recent comparable sales rather than relying on any single headline figure.
