Lina Iris Viktor

British-Liberian, b. 1987

Painting · Sculpture · Photography · Performance

Lina Iris Viktor has built, in roughly a decade, a practice that museums collect and critics single out for its distinct visual language: dense fields of 24-karat gold leaf combined with deep black and lapis blue, arranged into self-portraits and cosmological compositions that address African history, empire, and diasporic identity. For a collector, she represents an artist whose institutional footing, gallery exhibitions at Autograph, the New Orleans Museum of Art, and Sir John Soane's Museum, and museum collecting, is well ahead of a still-thin auction record.

Lina Iris Viktor was born in the United Kingdom in 1987 to Liberian parents. She attended an international school in London, where she received an early education in the performance arts. She then moved to the United States, initially to study theater at Sarah Lawrence College in New York before switching to film, earning a BA in film. She went on to pursue continuing-education studies in photography and design at the School of Visual Arts in New York.

Viktor's practice spans painting, sculpture, photography, and performance, and is most closely associated with her use of 24-karat gold leaf worked alongside black, white, and blue pigment. Her recurring themes include ancient African empires, astrophysics and cosmology, and the social and historical weight attached to Blackness. Her Constellations series, begun around 2016, established this visual signature and later became her most recognized auction work. She has exhibited at institutions including the New Orleans Museum of Art, Autograph in London, Fotografiska in Stockholm and Tallinn, and, in 2024 and 2025, her first UK solo museum exhibition at Sir John Soane's Museum. She is represented by Pilar Corrias in London and Salon 94 in New York, where she held a solo exhibition, Red Season, in 2025. Around 2022 she relocated to the south of Italy, and current sources describe her as living and working between Italy and the United Kingdom.

Viktor's critical reception centers on the way she fuses opulent, gilded surfaces with pointed historical and political content, addressing the history of Black empire, cosmology, and diasporic identity through cosmological self-portraiture. Her inclusion in the 2022 survey In the Black Fantastic, at London's Hayward Gallery and Rotterdam's Kunsthal, placed her among artists using speculative and mythic imagery to reframe Black aesthetics, and her acquisition by institutions such as the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, the Crocker Art Museum, and the Hessel Museum of Art has reinforced a critical consensus that treats her gold-leaf compositions as serious historical and political statements rather than decorative surfaces.

Viktor's auction history is short but has produced strong individual results. Her recorded high is Constellations III (2016), which sold at Phillips London on 13 May 2021 for GBP 195,300, reported as roughly USD 269,212 including fees. A related work, Constellations II, sold at Phillips for GBP 50,800. Market databases list only a small number of works that have come to auction for her, meaning her secondary market remains thin relative to her institutional profile, and any single result should be read in that context rather than as a broad trend line.

Authentication and provenance

No published catalogue raisonne exists for this artist. Works are verified through her representing galleries, Pilar Corrias and Salon 94, and through documented exhibition and sale provenance.

Viktor's market is defined more by institutional validation than by auction depth. She has no published catalogue raisonne, so provenance and verification through her representing galleries, Pilar Corrias and Salon 94, matter more than they would for an artist with a longer sale history. Because only a handful of works have appeared at auction, a strong single result, such as the 2021 Phillips sale of Constellations III, should be treated as a data point rather than a stable trend, and collectors should weigh her deep museum collecting record and recent solo museum exhibitions as the more durable signal of her standing.
