Liu Jianhua

Liu Jianhua was born in 1962 in Ji'an, Jiangxi Province, China. As a teenager he began working in ceramics at the Jingdezhen Pottery and Porcelain Sculpture Factory, an apprenticeship that sources place at roughly eight years, though accounts vary on whether it began around 1977 or at age fourteen. He went on to study sculpture in the Fine Arts Department of the Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute (also known as the Jingdezhen Pottery and Porcelain College) from 1985 to 1989, graduating in 1989.

After graduation, Liu taught at the Yunnan Arts Institute from 1989 to 2004. Since 2004 he has been a professor in the Department of Sculpture at the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, Shanghai University, and he lives and works in Shanghai. In 2005 he became a founding member of the artist collective Polit-Sheer-Form Office, alongside Hong Hao, Xiao Yu, Song Dong, and curator Leng Lin. His porcelain and mixed-material sculpture, including his recurring Polychrome Ceramic Series, has centered on mass production, consumer objects, and the social residue of China's material culture. He represented China in the China Pavilion at the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003 and was included in the main exhibition, Viva Arte Viva, at the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017.

Liu Jianhua is consistently described by galleries and museums as one of China's most inventive artists working with porcelain, valued for turning a material associated with tradition and craft toward questions of mass production, urbanization, and globalization. His inclusion in the touring exhibition The Allure of Matter: Material Art from China, and in the main exhibition of the 2017 Venice Biennale, reflects a broad institutional consensus around his standing.
