Liu Shuishi

Liu Shuishi was born in 1962 in Xi'an, China. In 1987, at about age 19, he entered the Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts; multiple biographical accounts state that he left after roughly two years, dissatisfied with the academy's classical training, and went on to teach art classes rather than complete a formal degree. One museum exhibition text describes him simply as having "graduated" from the academy, but this conflicts with the more detailed accounts, and no source documents a specific degree.

Around 2007, Liu underwent what several galleries describe as a philosophical awakening, engaging with the work of Kant, Nietzsche, Freud, and other Western philosophers alongside Asian philosophical traditions. His style shifted over this period from figural portraiture toward a looser, more abstract visual language centered on consciousness and self-reflection. In 2009 he exhibited in Paris at the Salon du Carrousel du Louvre and at Art en Capital, where he received a silver prize from the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts. By 2015 he presented a solo exhibition reported to be in the Syrian National Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale, the same year he held the solo exhibition "Thinking As Art Media" at the Today Art Museum in Beijing.

Liu moved to New York around 2016 and established a studio there. In 2018 he held a retrospective at Chase Contemporary in New York, the gallery that has since represented him, and in 2019 held the solo exhibition "Forms of Desire" at Findlay Galleries in New York. In 2023 he presented "We All Exist," a solo exhibition at the Zhuhai Museum in China. He continues to live and work in New York, and opened the solo exhibition "Existential, Being" at Isabel Sullivan Gallery in New York in early 2026.

Coverage of Liu Shuishi has tended to focus on the philosophical underpinnings of his abstraction and on his transition from figurative to gestural painting after 2007. Reporting on his 2018 New York retrospective at Chase Contemporary quoted the international curator Noelle Xie, who organized the show's accompanying panel, saying that "Liu Shuishi's paintings reflect his growing concerns of modern society's complexity and instability of today's life" (Xinhua News Agency, 2018). His institutional exhibition history, including the Syrian National Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale and solo shows at the Today Art Museum and the Zhuhai Museum, has been the primary basis for critical attention rather than auction results.

Liu Shuishi's market is primarily a primary-market and institutional one, with limited public auction activity. He is represented in New York by Chase Contemporary, and Isabel Sullivan Gallery has actively offered his paintings at retail, including a still-life work listed at USD 12,000. Christie's has reported strong results for the artist in a Post-War and Contemporary Week sale, including The Smart One, which sold for USD 125,000 against a low estimate of USD 30,000, and Toady, which realized USD 81,250; the exact sale date could not be confirmed from available reporting. His paintings are held in the collections of the Macao Foundation and the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs, and a 2014 painting titled "Existence" is reported to have been acquired by former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.

There is no catalogue raisonne for Liu Shuishi, and his public auction history is limited to a small number of reported results at Christie's, so provenance and authenticity for any work should be verified directly with Chase Contemporary or the exhibiting gallery rather than through auction-house price history. Because his exhibition record spans China, France, and the United States under a consistently used name, and because at least one unrelated person (a Chinese actress with a similarly transliterated name) surfaces in general searches, collectors and researchers should confirm they are looking at records for the painter born in 1962 in Xi'an, not a namesake. His strongest documented signals of durability are institutional: a national-pavilion presentation at the Venice Biennale, museum solo shows in China, and acquisitions by public collections, rather than any track record of public sale prices.
