Liu Wenxi

Liu Wenxi was born in October 1933 in a small village in what was then Shengxian, near Shaoxing in Zhejiang Province, China (the area is now part of Shengzhou). After an early recommendation from writer and educator Chen Wangdao, he studied at Shanghai Yucai School from about 1950 to 1953, then entered the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (now the China Academy of Art) in Hangzhou, studying under Pan Tianshou, Fang Zengxian, and Zhou Changgu before graduating in 1958.

After graduation he became a professor at the Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts, where he spent the rest of his career, eventually serving as president and later as dean and honorary dean. He also served as vice chairman of the China Artists Association. Working in ink and color figure painting, he became the central figure associated with depictions of the loess plateau and rural life in Shaanxi, a body of work that critics and institutions describe as founding the "Yellow Earth School." In the 1990s he was commissioned to paint the portrait of Mao Zedong used on the fifth series of the renminbi, which entered circulation in 1999 and is described by Chinese press as making him "the Chinese painter whose work has been viewed the most." He was married to fellow painter Chen Guangjian (1936 to 2024), with whom he also exhibited jointly on occasion.

Liu Wenxi died on 7 July 2019 at the No. 1 Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University in Xi'an, Shaanxi, at the age of 85. He was posthumously named a lifetime achievement artist by the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles in 2019. In 2021 the National Museum of China in Beijing mounted a major exhibition of his work, "Art for the People: Liu Wenxi Art Exhibition," describing him as one of the most representative figures of Party-aligned literature and art in his generation.

Liu Wenxi's reputation rests primarily on institutional recognition inside China rather than on a body of Western art criticism. The National Museum of China's 2021 retrospective framed him as one of the most outstanding and representative artists to have followed the Party's line in literature and art. Chinese state media have separately described him as "the Chinese painter whose work has been viewed the most," owing to the Mao Zedong portrait he painted for the fifth series of the renminbi. No exact, individually attributed quotations from named art critics in major outlets could be verified in the available sources.

Liu Wenxi's public auction record is not well documented compared with blue-chip Chinese painters of his generation. The highest documented result found is "Lady," which sold for HKD 384,000 at China Guardian Hong Kong on 6 April 2024. Several listings on Western auction platforms describe works "in the manner of" or "attributed to" Liu Wenxi rather than as confirmed autograph works, which points to real attribution risk in the secondary market. Liu Wenxi's market sits at an unusual intersection: extremely high cultural visibility inside China through the renminbi commission and museum programming, alongside a public auction record that is sparse. There is no confirmed catalogue raisonne, no documented current gallery or estate representation, and no confirmed permanent museum collection holding, and the presence of "manner of" and "attributed to" listings in Western auction houses means provenance and signature verification deserve particular care. Collectors should treat any single reported price for this artist as provisional pending fuller documentation.
