Why Liu Xiaodong matters
Liu Xiaodong is one of the leading figures of Chinese Neo-Realism, a painter who has spent four decades working on site among the migrants, laborers, and ordinary people caught in China's rapid economic transformation. For a collector, he represents a rare combination: an artist whose paintings function as history painting for the contemporary world, whose institutional footprint runs through the Venice Biennale and the Guggenheim, and whose auction market, while capable of eight-figure results, remains comparatively thin and unevenly documented next to his Western contemporaries.

Biography
Liu Xiaodong was born in 1963 in Jincheng, Liaoning Province, China, according to Lisson Gallery and Art21, though one gallery source gives 1962. He trained at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in oil painting in 1988 and a Master of Fine Arts in oil painting in 1995, and later continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, Complutense University of Madrid, from 1998 to 1999. He now holds a tenured professorship in CAFA's Oil Painting Department.
His practice centers on large-scale figurative paintings made in the field, often alongside written diaries and photographic or video documentation of the people he paints, typically migrant workers, laborers, and communities on the margins of economic and geographic change. This documentary approach extends to the "Hometown Boy" project, presented at institutions including the Seattle Art Museum and UCCA, which traces his return to his birthplace of Jincheng. He lives and works in Beijing.
Critical reception
Institutions and galleries consistently place Liu Xiaodong among the most significant painters to have emerged from China's contemporary art scene, describing him as a leading figure of Chinese Neo-Realism and, in Lisson Gallery's words, a painter whose large-scale works serve as a kind of history painting for the emerging world. His inclusion in the Venice Biennale in 1997 and 2013, in the Guggenheim's "Art and China after 1989: Theater of the World" in 2017 to 2018, and in the Phillips Collection's "The Warmth of Other Suns" in 2019 reflects sustained curatorial interest in his documentary method. His 2016 survey "Painting as Shooting" at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice was presented as the first major European exhibition to fully explore his practice. No verifiable, exact quotations from named critics in major outlets could be confirmed for this profile.
Market
Liu Xiaodong's auction record is held by "Disobeying the Rules" (1996), which sold for approximately USD 8.5 million at Sotheby's Hong Kong on 5 October 2013, a result widely reported at the time as a new world record for the artist. No later sale has been publicly reported to surpass this result. Beyond this headline price, his broader auction activity runs mostly in the mid five and six figure range at Asian sale rooms, and aggregate market statistics from third-party databases vary enough between sources that they should be treated with caution rather than cited as settled figures.

What collectors should know
Liu Xiaodong's market sits at an unusual intersection: museum-grade critical standing paired with an auction record that is comparatively sparse and, in places, inconsistently reported across databases. There is no confirmed catalogue raisonne, so provenance should be checked directly against gallery records, most notably through Lisson Gallery, which represents the artist. Because his highest-value results are concentrated in a small number of Hong Kong sales rather than a deep, liquid trading history, collectors should treat any single price point as informative but not necessarily representative of the market as a whole.
