Louis-Andre-Gabriel Bouchet

Louis-Andre-Gabriel Bouchet was born in 1759 in Paris. He trained as a pupil of Jacques-Louis David, the leading Neoclassical painter of the period, and by 1797 had earned the Premier Grand Prix de Rome in painting for La Mort de Caton d'Utique. He exhibited at the Paris Salon at least as early as 1791, with Daniel separant les deux vieillards qui avaient accuse Suzanne, and again in 1798 with a portrait of the citoyenne Saint-Aubin in the role of Lisbeth. Sources describe him continuing to exhibit at the Salon until 1819.

Bouchet worked across history painting on biblical, classical, and literary subjects, and portraiture. His works are held today by museums including the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Seattle Art Museum, the National Gallery of Art, the Musee Granet in Aix-en-Provence, and the Palace of Versailles, among others. He died in Paris on 7 July 1842.
