Luca Carlevarijs

Luca Carlevarijs was born on 20 January 1663 in Udine, Italy. After the early death of his parents in 1679, he and his sister moved to Venice, where the Zenobio family became his patrons; some sources record his name in connection with the family as "Luca di Ca Zenobio." No formal art training is documented; a contemporary portrait showing him with a pair of dividers has led scholars to infer some form of mathematical training, though no school or teacher is named in any source consulted.

His activity as a painter, engraver, and architect in Venice is documented from 1698. In 1703 he published Le fabbriche, e vedute di Venezia, a set of 104 etched views of the city that became, in the words of Art UK, "the foundation on which Canaletto and Guardi built." His name appears on the rolls of the confraternity of Venetian Painters in 1708 to 1713, 1712, and 1726, confirming his professional standing in the city.

According to the UniCredit Art Collection's artist biography, Carlevarijs was struck by a progressive paralysis beginning in 1728 that, over roughly two years, led to his death. He died on 12 February 1730 in Venice, Italy.

Later scholarship consistently frames Carlevarijs as the point of origin for Venetian view painting rather than as a peer of the more famous vedutisti who followed him. Sotheby's Old Master Paintings specialists, cataloguing a major veduta in 2005, described him as "undoubtedly to be considered the founder of the Venetian school of view painting, epitomised in the 18th century by more well known vedutisti such as Canaletto, Bellotto and Guardi." The UniCredit Art Collection similarly calls him "the father of eighteenth-century Venetian landscape painting." The Getty Museum notes that he achieved this despite an apparent lack of any formal training, a point that recurs across institutional accounts of his career.

Carlevarijs's market is conducted entirely through the Old Master departments of major auction houses; there is no contemporary gallery or estate representation, as is typical for an artist three centuries deceased. His auction record is View of Venice, which sold for USD 4,002,500 at Christie's in London on 7 December 2010, reported at the time as a world record price for the artist. Other results sit well below that level: a view of Venice with the Piazzetta di San Marco and Palazzo Ducale sold for EUR 475,800 including premium at Lempertz against a EUR 350,000 estimate. His work also appears periodically at Sotheby's, Christie's, and Pandolfini, generally in Old Master sales alongside Canaletto and Guardi.

There is no confirmed catalogue raisonne for Carlevarijs, so attribution rests on museum scholarship and on the Old Master specialists at the auction houses that regularly bring his paintings, drawings, and etchings to market. His sales are infrequent and span a wide price range, from the USD 4 million Christie's record down to results in the low hundreds of thousands of euros, so provenance and condition weigh heavily on any given result.
