Lucas van Uden

Lucas van Uden was born in Antwerp on 18 October 1595, the son of Artus van Uden, an Antwerp city painter, and Joanna Tranoy. He most likely trained in his father's workshop, where he is said to have first worked as a gilder and barrel painter before turning to landscape painting. There is no record of him as a registered pupil in the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke; he appears in the guild's records only as a master's son, in 1626 to 1627, by which time he was already thirty-two. On 14 February 1627 he married Anna van Woelput.

Van Uden specialized almost exclusively in landscape, working mainly in Antwerp but traveling between 1644 and 1661 to Brussels and other towns in Flanders. His work shows the strong influence of Rubens, absorbing Rubensian light and structure into his own panoramic views, though the Städel Museum and the Nationalmuseum both note that a direct collaboration inside Rubens's own workshop cannot be documented. His collaboration with Teniers is better attested: several of his landscapes are jointly catalogued with figures added by David Teniers the Younger, including a painting held by the National Gallery, London. He also produced etchings and drawings, media in which his sense of light and atmosphere is particularly admired.

Lucas van Uden died in Antwerp on 4 November 1672 and was buried in the city's Sint-Jacobskerk (St. James' Church). A small number of secondary sources give a death year of 1673, but the more precise and consistently corroborated date across museum authority records, including the Städel Museum and Art UK, is 4 November 1672.

Modern museum scholarship treats Van Uden as a central figure in Antwerp's landscape tradition. The Nationalmuseum in Stockholm describes him, together with Jan Wildens, as one of the most important landscape painters of his time. His drawings and etchings are also noted for a refined sense of light and atmosphere, and his oil landscapes are prized for the way figures added by other hands, most documented in the case of Teniers, animate settings that Van Uden built with careful, atmospheric structure. Because he worked in the seventeenth century, there is no body of signed newspaper or magazine criticism attached to his name; his reputation rests instead on continuous representation in major museum collections, including the Hermitage, the National Gallery in London, and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, and on his documented ties to Teniers and, by tradition though unproven in specialist museum sources, to Rubens.

Lucas van Uden's market is that of a well-collected but thinly traded Old Master. The Lempertz artist index lists two of the higher realized prices identified for the artist: EUR 66,000 for Panoramic Landscape with Castle and Figures and EUR 16,660 for Landschaft mit dem Wettstreit der Musen und Pieriden; exact sale dates for these results are not disclosed in that source. Separately, Artnet's database records CHF 55,000 for a work catalogued as "Attributed to Lucas van Uden, Belebte Waldlandschaft mit Teich," sold on 7 December 2023, though the "attributed to" cataloguing means it is not a firmly authenticated example, and the specific auction house is not identified in the source reviewed. Sotheby's included a work titled Wooded River Landscape in a 2026 sale, Master Works on Paper from Five Centuries, though no estimate or realized price for that lot is confirmed. Taken together, these figures point to a market with documented results from the high five figures to roughly EUR 66,000, but no single source provides a work title, price, auction house, and exact sale date together, so no fully documented all-time auction record can be stated for this profile.
