Luigi Ontani

Luigi Ontani was born on 24 November 1943 in Grizzana Morandi, near Vergato, in the province of Bologna. He enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts of Bologna and, in connection with a period of military service in Turin, attended an open life-drawing course there. Beyond that course, no completed degree is documented, and multiple biographical sources describe him as largely self-taught.

He moved to Rome in 1970, the city that has anchored his career since, alongside continuing ties to Bologna and to Riola di Vergato. His practice spans photography, performance, sculpture, painting, and installation, most recognizably through elaborately staged, hand-colored photographic tableaux in which he casts himself as figures drawn from myth, literature, and non-Western iconography, and through ceramic, papier-mache, and glass sculptures built around the same cast of invented personas.

Ontani exhibited internationally early, with a solo show at Sonnabend Gallery in New York in 1977, and he was invited to the Venice Biennale across five editions between 1972 and 1995, as well as to the Lyon Biennale in 2000.
