Lukas Duwenhögger

Lukas Duwenhögger was born in Munich in 1956. His own published biography traces an unusually itinerant early life: time in Istanbul as a teenager in 1969, study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1973 to 1974, then Paris from 1974 to 1976. From 1976 to 1978 he worked as a conscientious objector in hospital work in Penzberg and Schwabing, followed by travel through Istanbul, Iran, Pakistan, and India between 1978 and 1980, and a period in Rome from 1980 to 1984.

He then moved to Düsseldorf, studying at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from roughly 1984 to 1989 within a longer stay in the city through 1990. No source documents a completed degree or diploma from either academy. He lived in Berlin from around 1990 before relocating permanently to Istanbul in 2000, where he continues to live and work today. His practice spans painting, installation, and collage, frequently built around narrative and theatrical scenes drawn from his own biography and from life in Istanbul.

Institutional attention to Duwenhögger accelerated in 2016, when Raven Row in London mounted You Might Become a Park, a survey spanning more than thirty years of paintings, installations, collages, and objects; e-flux described it as among the first surveys to date of his work. Artists Space in New York presented a companion exhibition, Undoolay, the same year. Writers in outlets including Bidoun and Frieze have discussed his narrative, theatrical paintings in terms of queer and diasporic themes tied to his decades in Istanbul.

Public auction results for Duwenhögger are sparse and inconsistently documented. The best documented result located across major auction-house and market-database sources is Birds of Istanbul, which sold for GBP 92,500 at Phillips against a GBP 15,000 to 20,000 estimate; the exact sale date and saleroom are not specified in the sources reviewed.
