Ma Desheng

Ma Desheng was born in 1952 in Beijing. Left with a physical disability after childhood polio, he completed middle school and was then assigned work as an industrial draftsman in a Beijing machinery factory during the Cultural Revolution, an experience that gave him the manual precision he later applied to woodblock printmaking. In 1977 he applied to the newly reopened Beijing Central Academy of Fine Arts and was rejected, reportedly on account of his disability, and instead joined an amateur art course at a workers' cultural center, where he met the artist Huang Rui.

In September 1979, Ma Desheng and Huang Rui organized the Stars Exhibition (Xingxing), hanging their own and others' work, including that of Wang Keping and Ai Weiwei, on the fence outside the National Art Museum of China in Beijing. The unofficial show was shut down by authorities within days but is now regarded as a landmark moment for independent Chinese art. Ma left China around 1983 and settled in Paris in 1986, where he has lived and worked since, developing a signature body of paintings built from stacked, personified stone forms alongside his earlier woodblock prints and ink and calligraphic work. In 2022 the French Ministry of Culture named him a Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, and in 2023 the Centre Pompidou presented a solo exhibition of his work in Paris. He continues to live and work in Paris.

Critical attention has focused less on price than on Ma Desheng's role in founding an independent Chinese art movement and on the physicality of his later stone paintings. Curator Jean-Paul Desroches of the Musee Guimet has described the stacked stone works as structured "like the works of Brancusi, volcanic like those of Matisse, but as existential as Morandi's still lifes," a framing repeated by galleries and art platforms discussing the series. Writers covering his career consistently return to the same arc: a self-taught artist barred from formal art training who became, alongside Huang Rui, Wang Keping, and Ai Weiwei, a co-founder of the Stars Group, and who has since been absorbed into major public collections in Paris, London, and Hong Kong.

Ma Desheng's secondary market is thin relative to his art-historical standing. The highest price identified in available auction records is HKD 1,040,000 (roughly USD 133,000) for the painting United Symphony, reported as sold in November 2011 in Hong Kong; the auction house is likely Poly Auction based on the surrounding sale context, though this attribution is not fully confirmed, and the exact sale day is not documented in available records. Other tracked results, such as the painting Love at roughly HKD 259,600 in 2014, sit well below that figure. As of mid-2026 he is represented by 3812 Gallery in Hong Kong and London, A2Z Art Gallery in Paris, and Galerie Oriane in Munich, with primary-market solo exhibitions running through 2025 and 2026.

There is no catalogue raisonne for Ma Desheng, and authentication runs primarily through his representing galleries and institutional exhibition history rather than a codified certification body. His auction record is built on a small number of public sales, mostly in Hong Kong and denominated in HKD, so any single result should be read with caution rather than treated as a stable benchmark. His importance is anchored far more securely in museum collections, most notably the Centre Pompidou, the British Museum, and M+ Hong Kong, than in auction volume, which is a useful reminder that institutional standing and market liquidity do not always move together.
