Why Ma Liuming matters
Ma Liuming is one of the founding figures of Chinese performance art, best known for creating Fen-Ma Liuming, an androgynous alter ego built from a made-up female face on his own nude male body. His early 1990s performances, made inside the Beijing East Village artist community, are treated by museums and archives as foundational to the history of contemporary Chinese art. For a collector, he represents a case where institutional and art-historical importance, held by the Tate, M+, the Walther Collection, and the Asia Art Archive, sits well ahead of a thin and largely undeveloped auction market.

Biography
Ma Liuming was born in 1969 in Huangshi, Hubei province, China. He began studying oil painting privately in 1981 with the tutor Cai Erhe, then entered the Hubei Institute of Fine Arts (also rendered Hubei Academy of Fine Arts) in Wuhan in 1987, graduating from its Oil Painting Department in 1991. Sources differ on whether that 1991 credential amounted to a bachelor's or a master's degree.
In 1993, two years after graduating, Ma moved to the Beijing East Village, a community of artists working outside official channels who became central to the development of Chinese performance art. There he developed the persona Fen-Ma Liuming, presenting his own nude body with a feminized, cosmetic face to unsettle fixed categories of gender and to test the boundaries the state placed on the body in public. His nude performances drew official attention, and multiple institutional sources describe him being detained and arrested by Chinese authorities in the early 1990s as a direct result of this work. In 1998 he performed Fen-Ma Liuming Walks the Great Wall, one of his most widely cited works. By the early 2000s he had largely stepped back from performance and returned to painting, a shift several institutional sources connect to the changed climate around his earlier work. He continues to live and work in Beijing.
Critical reception
Ma Liuming is consistently framed by museums and archives as a pioneer of Chinese performance art and one of the central figures of the Beijing East Village scene of the early 1990s, alongside artists working through the body to question gender, censorship, and state control over public space. His inclusion in the Tate, M+ and the M+ Sigg Collection, the Walther Collection, and the Asia Art Archive reflects a broad institutional consensus that his early performance and photographic work is historically significant. Recent survey exhibitions at institutions including the Hirshhorn Museum, Cornell's Johnson Museum of Art, and Munich's Haus der Kunst have placed his photographs and performance documentation within larger accounts of Chinese contemporary photography and video. No verified, exact critical quotations from named critics in major outlets could be confirmed for this profile.
Market
Ma Liuming's saleroom footprint is small and inconsistently documented compared with his museum standing. The best-verified public auction result identified is USD 30,000 for an untitled work sold at Christie's on 12 March 2021, as recorded in VeryImportantLot's archived listing of the sale. Bonhams (Hong Kong) and Sotheby's (Hong Kong) have offered works including the oil painting Baby 01 No.7 and the photograph Fen-Ma Liuming Walks the Great Wall, but publicly accessible listings for those lots show only pre-sale estimates rather than confirmed hammer prices, so they cannot be used to establish a higher record. Given these gaps, the USD 30,000 result should be read as the highest documented public sale rather than a confirmed all-time auction record.

Authentication and provenance
No catalogue raisonne.

What collectors should know
Ma Liuming's market is thin and unevenly documented, with far more institutional exhibition and collection history than confirmed auction results. There is no catalogue raisonne, and current gallery representation is confirmed only through Tokyo Gallery + BTAP, which mounted a 2026 solo exhibition. Collectors should treat any single public sale figure with caution given how few realized prices are publicly verifiable, and should expect that the performance-era photographs, which anchor his museum reputation, and the later paintings, which followed his return to that medium in the early 2000s, may carry different weight with institutions than with the auction market.
