Manolo Valdés

Manolo Valdés, born Manuel Valdés Blasco on 8 March 1942 in Valencia, Spain, entered the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Carlos in Valencia in 1957 and left after about two years, before completing a degree, to devote himself to painting. In 1964 he co-founded Equipo Crónica with Rafael Solbes and, briefly, Joan Toledo. Working chiefly as the Solbes-Valdés partnership after Toledo's early departure, the group used appropriated Old Master and pop imagery to comment obliquely on Francoist Spain, and remained active until Solbes's death in 1981.

After Equipo Crónica, Valdés developed an independent practice built around large-scale sculpture in bronze and aluminum alongside painting and mixed-media collage, frequently reworking figures from Velázquez's Las Meninas and other historical sources at monumental scale. He represented Spain at the 48th Venice Biennale in 1999. He later relocated to New York, where he lives and works today alongside Madrid.

Valdés's critical standing was built first through Equipo Crónica, credited with using Pop-derived, appropriated imagery to critique Francoist Spain from within a censored public sphere, and then sustained through his solo career's engagement with art history itself, particularly his recurring return to Velázquez's Las Meninas and to Matisse. Spain's National Award for Plastic Arts (1983) and Gold Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts (1998) mark an official recognition that has run alongside museum surveys at institutions including the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and the Museo Reina Sofía. The planned opening of a dedicated museum for his work, Espai Manolo Valdés, in Valencia points to a further consolidation of his institutional legacy in his home region, though an opening date has not yet been announced.

Valdés's auction market spans sculpture, painting, and prints across multiple international houses. The most fully documented recent result is Una menina, a two-meter aluminum sculpture that sold at Artcurial in Monaco on 7 July 2026 for EUR 375,000 (about USD 427,000). Phillips has also recorded a sale of El Sofa Rojo for USD 444,500, though the exact sale date is not confirmed in available sources, so it cannot be stated with certainty which of these holds his true all-time auction high. Published results for Valdés remain thinner and more dispersed than for artists with a longer, denser auction history, and available sources do not support a confirmed, comprehensive auction record.
