Manuel Felguerez

Manuel Felguerez was born on December 12, 1928. He described his birthplace as the hacienda of San Agustin del Vergel, in the municipality of Valparaiso, Zacatecas, though his birth was officially registered at an address in Mexico City. In 1948 he enrolled briefly, for about four months, at the Academia de San Carlos and the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plasticas at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, leaving over disagreement with the dominant Mexican School of Painting. He studied further at the Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado "La Esmeralda" in 1951, and pursued a bachelor's degree in anthropology and history in Mexico through 1954.

On a French government scholarship, Felguerez studied in Paris at the Academie Colarossi and the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere between 1954 and 1959. Back in Mexico, he became a central figure of the Generacion de la Ruptura, the artists, including his contemporaries, who moved Mexican art away from muralism and toward abstraction and international modernism. His 1970s series El espacio multiple, explorations of geometric relief and sculptural painting, won the Grand Prize of Honor at the XIII Bienal de Sao Paulo in 1975, the same year he held a Guggenheim fellowship.

Felguerez received Mexico's Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes in 1988 and was named Creador Emerito of the Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte in 1993. In 1998 he founded the Museo de Arte Abstracto Manuel Felguerez in Zacatecas, donating a large body of his own work along with pieces by other abstract artists to form its anthological collection. He continued working into his final years, including experiments with computer-assisted and digital imagery.

Felguerez died at his home in Mexico City in early June 2020, at age 91, of complications from Covid-19.
