Marcin Maciejowski

Marcin Maciejowski was born on 14 June 1974 in Babice, near Krakow, Poland. He completed secondary studies at the Technikum Budowlane in Krzeszowice before enrolling in architecture at the Krakow University of Technology in 1994. He left that program after roughly three years without completing a degree, and moved instead into graphic arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, earning his diploma in 2001 from the poster studio of Prof. Piotr Kunce.

While still a student in the mid to late 1990s, he became one of the founding figures of Grupa Ladnie, an informal circle of Krakow painters, including Wilhelm Sasnal and Rafal Bujnowski, known for reworking mass-media and everyday imagery, from tabloid headlines to advertising, into paintings and drawings. By 2002 he had a solo exhibition, I live here and I feel good here, at the Zacheta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw and received the Paszport Polityki award in the visual arts category.

His profile grew through the 2000s with solo exhibitions in Vienna and New York, and in 2010 the National Museum in Krakow mounted a major solo exhibition, Tak jest. Marcin Maciejowski, cementing his museum standing in Poland.
