Why María Magdalena Campos-Pons matters
María Magdalena Campos-Pons is one of the leading Afro-Cuban artists of her generation, a photographer, sculptor, and performance artist whose work traces the history of the transatlantic slave trade, plantation labor, and diasporic memory through her own body and family history. A 2023 MacArthur Fellow with a multi-museum retrospective still touring as of 2026 and a place in the 2026 Venice Biennale, she is a case study in an artist whose institutional standing runs well ahead of a small, thinly documented auction market.

Biography
Campos-Pons was born on July 22, 1959, in La Vega, a sugar plantation town in Matanzas province, Cuba, a region with a documented history tied to Afro-Cuban plantation labor that recurs throughout her work. She trained in Cuba at the National School of Art in Havana, completing her studies there in 1980, and went on to earn a painting degree from the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana in 1985. She moved to the United States for graduate study and completed an MFA in Painting and Media Arts at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston in 1988.
Her practice spans large-format Polaroid photography, installation, performance, and painting, most often built around her own image and around objects tied to sugar, cloth, and domestic labor. She has run and founded several artist initiatives, including Gallery Artist Studio Projects (GASP) in Brookline, Massachusetts, and the Engine for Art, Democracy and Justice at Vanderbilt University. She now lives and works in Nashville, Tennessee, where she holds the Cornelius Vanderbilt Endowed Chair of Fine Arts at Vanderbilt University.
Critical reception
Institutional recognition for Campos-Pons has accelerated sharply in the 2020s. Her survey exhibition María Magdalena Campos-Pons: Behold opened at the Brooklyn Museum in 2023, her first New York museum survey, and traveled to the Frist Art Museum in Nashville, the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, and the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles through 2025. She received a MacArthur Fellowship in 2023 and an ARTnews Lifetime Achievement honor, and in 2026 she is among the participants in the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia. Writers covering the Behold survey have consistently framed her work around memory, ancestry, and the physical legacy of slavery in the Cuban sugar economy, reading her recurring use of her own body as a way of making that history present rather than abstract.
Market
Campos-Pons's auction market is small relative to her institutional profile. Her recorded high is USD 100,800 for Soy una fuente / I am fountain, sold at Christie's on March 9, 2023, against an estimate of USD 20,000 to 25,000; the sale location is not specified in available public reporting. That result was reported at the time as a new record for the artist, well above a prior high of USD 19,000 for the 2001 work Replenishing. Public auction appearances for her work remain infrequent, and most of her market activity runs through gallery sales and museum acquisitions rather than the secondary market.

What collectors should know
There is no published catalogue raisonne for Campos-Pons, so collectors should confirm attribution and provenance through her current galleries, Galerie Barbara Thumm and Gallery Wendi Norris, rather than relying on a single reference catalogue. Her auction history is thin, with one well-documented record sale in 2023 and little else in the public record, which means any single result should be treated as an early data point rather than an established price trend. Her presence in the Whitney Museum's permanent collection and in major museum survey exhibitions, including the Brooklyn Museum, the Frist Art Museum, and the Getty Center, is the stronger signal of long-term standing, while the limited volume of public sales is the main reason to move carefully on secondary-market claims.
