Mario Sanchez

Mario Sanchez was born on October 7, 1908, in Key West, Florida, in the Cuban cigar-making district known as Gato's Village, the son of a cigar maker. He attended local schools in Key West and, by 1925, completed a business institute program in stenography. He briefly worked as a clerk in Tampa's Ybor City before returning to Key West, where he held clerical jobs, including work at the Monroe County Courthouse.

Sanchez had no formal art training. He began carving and painting in 1930, teaching himself to make polychrome bas-relief carvings, or "intaglios," on cedar boards depicting daily life in his Cuban American neighborhood: cigar factories, street vendors, parades, and the diverse residents of Key West. He continued to work other jobs alongside his art until 1970, when he devoted himself to painting and carving full time.

In 1991 the State of Florida named him a recipient of the Florida Folk Heritage Award. His work entered the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in the 1960s, and later that of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Mario Sanchez died at his home in Key West, Florida, on April 28, 2005, at age 96.
