Mark di Suvero

Mark di Suvero was born on September 18, 1933, in Shanghai, China, to Italian parents, Matilde Millo di Suvero and Vittorio di Suvero, who were of Jewish descent. The family immigrated to San Francisco in 1941, when di Suvero was a young child. He studied philosophy and fine arts at San Francisco City College from 1953 to 1954 and later at the University of California, Santa Barbara, before transferring to the University of California, Berkeley, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, with sources placing his graduation in either 1956 or 1957.

He moved to New York in the late 1950s and began exhibiting sculpture built first from wood and later from salvaged structural steel, work that SFMOMA has described as tracing his path from timber construction to welding. His 1960 solo show at Richard Bellamy's Green Gallery in New York was an early breakthrough. In 1962 he co-founded Park Place Gallery, an artists' cooperative in New York. He received his first museum retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1975, and that same year became the first living artist to exhibit in the Tuileries Gardens in Paris. In 1977 he established the Athena Foundation to support artists, and in 1986 he founded Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City, New York, converting a former landfill into an outdoor exhibition space that remains active today.

Di Suvero has continued to exhibit into his nineties, including a 2024 survey, Mark di Suvero. Spacetime, organized by the Fondazione Progetti Beverly Pepper in Todi, Italy. According to the Italian arts publication Art a Part of Cult(ure), di Suvero did not travel to attend the opening because of his health and instead sent a written statement to be read at the event. He lives in Petaluma, California, and married Heidi Holst di Suvero in 2023.

Di Suvero is widely credited as a defining figure of large-scale American steel sculpture, admired for a body of work that treats structural steel with an almost calligraphic dynamism rather than as a purely industrial material.
