Mark Ryden

Mark Ryden was born on January 20, 1963, in Medford, Oregon. He earned a BFA from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, in 1987. He began his career as a commercial illustrator, producing widely seen album covers, including Michael Jackson's Dangerous and Red Hot Chili Peppers' One Hot Minute, before moving into gallery-based fine art in the 1990s and helping define the Pop Surrealism genre.

His first one-person museum exhibition, Wondertoonel, opened at the Frye Art Museum in Seattle in 2004 and traveled to the Pasadena Museum of California Art in 2005. Michael Kohn Gallery in Los Angeles, an early and important representative, presented The Tree Show in 2007, and his work was included in the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles's group exhibition The Artist's Museum in 2010. A career-spanning retrospective, Camara de las maravillas, opened at the Centro de Arte Contemporaneo de Malaga in Spain in December 2016 and continued into 2017. In 2017 he designed sets and costumes for American Ballet Theatre's production of Whipped Cream, a project that traveled to New York in an accompanying exhibition at Kasmin and at Gallery Met, the Metropolitan Opera House's gallery space.

He is currently represented by Perrotin, which has staged recent solo exhibitions including Animal Secrets in Paris and Yakalina 9 in Tokyo (both 2022) and Eye Am in Los Angeles (2025 to 2026), and by Kasmin in New York. Perrotin, in the most recent biographical statement available, describes him as living and working in Portland, Oregon; an earlier institutional bio placed him in Los Angeles.

Ryden is consistently framed by galleries and press as the figure who moved Pop Surrealism from subculture to institution. Perrotin's own artist materials call him the King of Pop Surrealism, and Interview magazine described him as the godfather of Pop Surrealism. Michael Kohn, the Los Angeles dealer whose gallery represented Ryden for years, has spoken publicly about the appeal of the work, framing it as more than technical skill alone. His 2017 designs for the American Ballet Theatre production Whipped Cream marked a rare crossover of a painter's visual language into the performing arts.

Ryden's reported all-time auction high is USD 714,000, for a painting identified in a single secondary account as Queen Bee and described there as having been offered through a charity sale benefiting the World Wildlife Fund. The price level is echoed by MutualArt's aggregate figures for his paintings, but the auction house, exact sale date, and sale mechanics are not independently confirmed and should be treated with caution. Away from that high point, Phillips has recorded far more modest results for his works on paper, including USD 52,500 for Big Doll and USD 38,100 for the drawing Classic Yak, a reminder that most works reaching saleroom are prints, drawings, or smaller pieces rather than major canvases.
