Martin Kobe

Martin Kobe was born on 9 January 1973 in Dresden, in what was then East Germany. He studied painting at the Hochschule fur Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig from 1995 to 2000, and continued there as a Meisterschuler, or master student, under the painter Arno Rink from 2000 to 2003. He lives and works in Leipzig.

Early institutional recognition followed quickly: Kobe was selected for the Forderkoje program at Art Cologne in 2003, held the Karl Schmidt-Rottluff Stipendium from 2004 to 2006, and won a special award in the 6th Kunstpreis der Leipziger Volkszeitung in 2005. In 2007 the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden gave him a museum survey, The centre cannot hold, at the Kunsthalle im Lipsiusbau. The same year he had his first known solo exhibition with White Cube in London, Behind True Symmetry. Through the following decade he showed with galleries in Berlin, Milan, and London, including solo exhibitions at Galerie Christian Ehrentraut, Brand New Gallery, and Pippy Houldsworth Gallery. In 2020 the Museum de Fundatie in Zwolle presented a solo exhibition, Crux, and he has continued to show with Galerie Jochen Hempel, his current gallery in Leipzig and Berlin, including a solo presentation in Leipzig in 2023.

Kobe's paintings are generally discussed in terms of architecture rendered unstable: dense, layered perspective lines that suggest built space while resisting a single fixed viewpoint.
