Mary Weatherford

Mary Weatherford was born in 1963 in Ojai, California. She studied visual arts and art history at Princeton University, briefly considering architecture before settling on painting, and received her B.A. in 1984. After graduating she moved to New York, where in 1985 she was a Helena Rubinstein Fellow in the Whitney Museum of American Art's Independent Study Program. She later returned to school for an M.F.A., completed in 2006 at the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College.

Weatherford moved from New York back to her native Southern California in 1999, and her paintings since then have drawn heavily on the landscape, light, and urban texture of California as well as her earlier years in New York. Around 2012 she began incorporating neon tubing into her paintings, running colored light across and beyond the edges of pigment-washed linen, a signature device that has defined her mature work. In addition to her longstanding relationship with David Kordansky Gallery, she is also represented by Gagosian. She lives and works in Los Angeles.

Weatherford's inclusion in the Museum of Modern Art's 2014 survey The Forever Now: Contemporary Painting in an Atemporal World placed her among the artists credited with keeping ambitious abstract painting relevant to a contemporary audience. Her traveling survey Canyon, Daisy, Eden, organized by the Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College and shown at SITE Santa Fe in 2020 and 2021, and her 2021 solo exhibition Mary Weatherford: Neon Paintings at the Aspen Art Museum, consolidated her reputation as a painter whose use of neon and scale reads as both landscape and architecture. She received the Artists' Legacy Foundation Artist Award in 2014, and in 2022 was given a solo exhibition, The Flaying of Marsyas, at the Museo di Palazzo Grimani in Venice. Her 2026 exhibition Persephone at Gagosian in Hong Kong, her first solo show in Asia, extends that institutional and gallery momentum into a new market.
