Masanobu Masatoshi

Masanobu Masatoshi was born in 1911 in Susaki, Kochi Prefecture, Japan. He trained as a teacher at Kochi Normal School and completed an advanced, postgraduate-level course at the Kochi Prefectural School of Education in 1933, then worked as an elementary school teacher in Kochi, Tokyo, and Kobe. No formal art-school training is documented for him, and he built his painting practice around his teaching career.

Around 1948 or 1949, he began attending the Kobe Citizens' Art Course, where he met Jiro Yoshihara and began studying under him. When Yoshihara founded the Gutai Art Association in 1954, Masanobu became one of its founding members and remained active until the group dissolved in 1972, participating in every Gutai Art Exhibition held during that period. Gutai singled him out for two honors it gave to only a select few members: participation in the 1960 International Sky Festival, and, in 1965, a solo exhibition at the Gutai Pinacotheca in Osaka. After Gutai's dissolution he continued to paint and teach locally, showing in Nishinomiya and Kobe.
