Matteo Pugliese

Matteo Pugliese was born in Milan in 1969. His family moved to Sardinia in 1978, and he spent the next twelve years there, completing classical secondary studies in Cagliari. He returned to Milan and, in 1995, earned a degree in Modern Literature from the University of Milan, with a thesis on art criticism. He has no formal training as a sculptor; by his own account and that of his galleries, he developed his practice in clay and bronze without art-school instruction.

He staged his first, self-organized solo exhibition in Milan in 2001. From roughly 2003 to 2009 he showed with Galleria Gagliardi in San Gimignano, and he went on to develop the body of work for which he is best known, bronze figures shown emerging from or straining against walls, gates, and other architectural forms, later extended into the Guardians and Custodi series. His work has since been shown internationally, including solo exhibitions at Imago Art Gallery in Lugano, WM Gallery and a public installation at Saint Charles Borromeo Church in Antwerp, Palau Martorell in Barcelona, Tai Kwun in Hong Kong (presented by Kwai Fung Hin Art Gallery), and Dorothy Circus Gallery in London. In 2025, Palazzo Merulana in Rome, home to the Fondazione Elena e Claudio Cerasi, mounted the solo exhibition Nelle tue mani; the foundation's permanent collection already held his sculpture Gravitas. He is married with one daughter and lives and works in Milan.

A more clearly documented result is Becoming, which sold for GBP 52,500 at Sotheby's London on 12 February 2020, above its high estimate. His official biography states that his works have also appeared at Christie's, Bonhams, and Dorotheum, though individual results for those houses were not independently confirmed in this research pass.
